Ok. I just upgraded both my Mac Mini and MacBook Air to Snow Leopard. I still haven't played with Quicktime X, but before I go crazy and download other video programs, I would like to know if it's really necessary.

I mainly play AVI, MOV, WMV and the occasional DIVX files. Should I download Perian, Flip4Mac and VLC? Shouldn't Quicktime X be able to read most of these common files now?

Quicktime X doesn't support anything Quicktime 7 didn't. You'll still need Flip4Mac and Perian.

The features that I need from QT7, that made me install it alongside QTX, are the ability to rotate those movies I accidentally shoot in portrait mode and the ability to extract audio from a movie file.

I'd also highly recommend VideoLAN Client (a.k.a. "VLC").

Yeah, I always have VLC as a backup, just in case Quicktime X doesn't support it, especially .flv files. Definitely recommend it also.
