View Full Version : How to Follow the 'Only Rock Roll' Event

Every time an Apple event comes around the same questions always come up, when is it? is it streaming live? where can I watch it?

So, to hopefully cut down on the number of posts asking these questions, in what seems to be becoming a tradition, I'm going to answer them all here, as I did at MacWorld (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/21/64824-how-follow-macworld-keynote.html), the OS 3.0 Event (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/19/60844-how-follow-iphone-os-3-0-event.html) and WWDC (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/19/64329-how-follow-wwdc-2009-keynote.html).

When is the Event?
The event will be occurring at 10am San Francisco time on Wednesday 9th September.

In Australia this is at the following times on Thursday 10th September:

Perth at 1:00am
Darwin at 2:30am
Brisbane at 3:00am
Adelaide at 2:30am
Canberra at 3:00am
Melbourne at 3:00am
Hobart at 3:00am
Sydney at 3:00am

Due to confusion I will make this perfectly clear: 10:00AM Wednesday in San Francisco is 3:00AM Thursday in Sydney. In other words, if you sleep normal hours, the keynote will be occurring between the time you go to sleep Wednesday night and the time you wake up Thursday morning.

Does Apple stream the event live?
No, Apple hasn't streamed an event live for many years.

Who will be delivering the keynote?
Apple has not identified the person delivering the keynote so we can't say for sure. However, this is the first event since Steve Jobs has returned from medical leave, so it's certainly possible he will deliver his first keynote since the October '08 introduction of the Unibody MacBook line. Although, since this was almost a year ago and people have gotten used to having Apple products announced by other Apple executives without the world collapsing in on itself, Steve may have decided that he doesn't need or want to do these product announcements anymore, and will pass on this duty to someone like Phil Schiller, who has done an admirable job in Steve's absence.

Will Apple make a video of the keynote available?
Apple hasn't announced plans to release a video of the keynote, but then again, they never do. They haven't failed to release a video for an event since at least 2006 (when I started paying attention).

When will they make the video available?
Assuming they are going to release a video, which they most likely will, it's impossible to predict when the video will be available as the time of release has never been consistent in the past, undoubtedly due to the differing run times of the keynotes and the fact the video has to be manually edited before being uploaded.

As a guide last September's Apple event ('Let's Rock', also held on the 9th) video was made available around 4pm in the US, or roughly 6 hours after the beginning of the event.

While no exact time can be given, since it's never the same, it's a pretty safe bet it will be available by midday Thursday wherever in Australia you live.

How can I get the Keynote video when it is made available?
Once the video is made available, a link should appear on the front page of Apple.com (http://www.apple.com/) and most likely on Apple's events page (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/appleevents/).

Alternatively you can subscribe to the Apple keynotes podcast (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=275834665) (iTunes link) using iTunes. It should be noted that although this podcast feed is usually a reliable place to get the video, the WWDC '09 keynote video took an unusually long time to be added to the feed.

If you are working or at school, or want to watch the keynote spoiler-free, subscribe to the podcast and set it to refresh every hour, and it should be ready for you when you get home.

Each keynote is usually between 500 and 1000MB, so if you choose this method be aware that iTunes will download the most recent episode (WWDC '09) if you haven't already got it, and then the iPod event when it becomes available.

Is there any way to follow the keynote live?
Since no official video or audio streams of the keynote will be available, the most reliable way to follow the keynote is to follow the liveblogs. For those who don't know, a liveblog is a webpage that is constantly updated with impressions and photos of the keynote by people from the audience.

gdgt will be covering the event here (http://live.gdgt.com/2009/09/09/live-apple-its-only-rock-and-roll-event-coverage/).
Gizmodo will covering the event here (http://live.gizmodo.com/).
Engadget will be covering the event here (http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/live-from-apples-its-only-rock-and-roll-event/).
9to5mac will be covering the event here (http://blogs.computerworld.com/14688/its_only_rock_and_roll_but_i_like_it_event_liveblo g?source=rss_weintraub).
MacWorld will be covering the event here (http://www.macworld.com/article/142674/2009/09/appleevent.html).

I will add more links here as sites announce their intention to live blog the event.

What is Apple going to announce at this event?
iPods. Usually we can never be certain about what Apple will announce, but for the last 4 years Apple has held an event in September and every time the event has been music focused and a new line of iPods released.

What will these new iPods look like? Hard to say, the most persistent rumours, mostly from trustworthy sources, as well as leaked images of new iPod cases, say there will be a new iPod touch and a new iPod nano, both of which will look identical to the current model, with the notable addition of a camera to the rear of the devices. It's unknown if the iPod classic will remain the same, see the addition of a camera, or be discontinued. The iPod touch will likely see a storage boost to 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, with the nano boosted to 16GB and 32GB capacities. Such a boost will greatly reduce the need for the iPod classic.

It's easy to dismiss these rumours but for the last 4 years leaked images and leaked cases have been right on the money, particularly with the iPod nano.

There have also been rumours of an Apple tablet device of some sort, with a 10" screen or larger, however most reliable rumour sites and pundits have stated this device is slated for 2010, not this upcoming event.

Also expected is a new iTunes (as there is every year), although whether this will be iTunes 9 or a point release is unknown.

Apple and the music companies are also said to be working on a new multimedia music format for albums called Cocktail which will bundle lyrics, artwork and more in an attempt to drive people to purchasing albums instead of single tracks. This upcoming music event is the perfect place to announce and demonstrate this new format.

NeoRicen, I think your post is still a little ambiguous and lacking in all the relevant information needed for people to make an informed choice

Could you do a chart for optimal sleep times for if people want to wake up for the keynote? Please take into consideration those who may be flying interstate and are slightly confused about what time it is, particularly those flying to/from Perth whose body clock may not have adjusted. Also, optimal caffeine levels needed to stay awake during the keynote, calculated by body type, weight, age and sex.

I am still going to be up at 2AM following all of the action through blogs and hopefully an official MacTalk IRC channel like last time (anyone have the link to how to set it up? I can't remember the details), although the lack of a live podcast-thing did make me question whether staying up was worth it, as for WWDC, that was the best bit.

I'll probably do it again this time.

I had a glorious sleep last night while wifey struggled the whole night with new baby who refused to sleep or settle when laid down. I fear for my personal safety if I'm not the one who goes on duty tonight. The Apple event is a happy coincidence that will make it easier to get through the night.

I wonder if we will be up for a suprise at this event ?

At WWDC, no one was expecting updates to the Macbook lineup, but look what happened ?

Could we possibly see new iMac's ?

I know this is an iPod event, but WWDC is mainly a software/developers event, but new hardware was unveiled....

Gruber (http://www.daringfireball.net/) predicted new MacBooks at WWDC and the 13" becoming Pro.

No.

WWDC has always seen new hardware, because developers use hardware.

September events have only ever been about iPods and iTunes (and offshoots like the AppleTV and Motorola iTunes phones etc.).

Last year there was an event in October, just under two months after last year's iPod event, and there were new Macs then (MacBooks), so an event next month for Macs is certainly a possibility. This is assuming any iMac update will need an event, which is unlikely if they're just going to be spec bumps. I don't think a new industrial design is on the cards.
