Thanks. The desk was bought from IKEA in 2003. I like to keep the working environment nice and sterile. Next I'll be looking at some way to get rid of all the unsightly cabling.

By putting my MBP on my bed when paperwork has to be done. And for as what I would do with all that power, a lot of Photoshop work and managing a massive iTunes collection. When I run Windows 7 under Boot Camp, it's Autodesk Inventor all the way as it's what I use at school.

I'm an active freelance video editor, so I have an excuse. Oh and by the way, I only have a MBP and that works amazingly and I'm editing HD videos using Final Cut with many add-ons. I also play some very graphics intensive games (Sims 3).
I die every time I use Final Cut because editing HD footage with 2GB ram = hell. It has improved with SL though. I wouldn't be able to use the MBP if it didn't have the NVIDIA 9600MGT graphics card.

My name is pete

here is where i live
http://whodaman.com.au/images/desk.jpg

and this is my server.

http://whodaman.com.au/images/server.jpg
I just finished upgrading this, its a G5 running 10.5 server. the two left external drives are backup drives one is for time machine and the other is a weekly dump that I take offsite.

The enclosure on the bottom right is the new bit. I just got it in last week from OWC. it is a 4 drive enclosure with esata and built in raid controller. I have filled it with 4, 1TB western digital enterprise drives and set it up to run in raid 5,

I used to have all of the drives internally in the G5 with a g5 jive internal enclosure. but every now and then the fans would spin up. so i was worried about how hot it was all getting. so far so good with the new set up.

once it has been running for a couple of weeks I will get rid of the keyboard mouse and monitor and just remote to it when needed.

gehenna
22nd October 2009, 03:41 PM
Nice setup, particularly the server....I guess with those internal drives now housed externally the Mac Mini Server must be looking mighty appealing to you :)

whodaman
22nd October 2009, 04:02 PM
Hey thanks!

Raid 5 and lots of space is important to me. the mac mini server's 2 500GB drives i don't think would cut it for me.

At present I have 4 drives in that enclosure, 3 in raid 5 and the fourth is spare and will rebuild instantly upon failure.

With the mini server the best i could do is a software raid 1 mirror and then on failure i would have to send it off to apple or get out the putty knife and hack it open myself...

But i was thinking possibly an entry level 160GB mac mini with SL server installed, then I could run this raid enclosure from that. the benefit of that would be i could run SL server. the downside would be that i would have to forget about esata and run the enclosure FW800.... would be nice and small and quiet though.

I am bummed i cant use SL on the G5

gehenna
22nd October 2009, 04:14 PM
Yeah but my point is now that your storage is external to the G5 you can reclaim some space by going from the big tower to the Mini and attaching your external storage to that ;)

whodaman
22nd October 2009, 04:28 PM
totally! that would be great.

but i would probably get it home and then decide it would be much better as the media centre mini I have always dreamed about and sit it next to the telly....

Over here in the U.S., normally when someone uses the term "partner" in a context that is not obviously a business one, it's sort of a code-word for a same-sex boy- or girlfriend.

Bit of cubic zirconia will do the trick, or try the gumball machine at the corner store - couple of 20c coins should eventually get you a ring.

On a more serious note - my missus was happy with a cheap ring and put money towards a house deposit instead.

You people with clean desks still make me sick:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2528/4061962463_5c18164c81_o.jpg

The Mac Mini is a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with the 9400M - 4GB of RAM and a 128GB G.Skill Falcon SSD. The screens, 24" BenQ E2400HD - which aren't that good, but for the price ($230 ea), I'm not complaining. They're perfectly adequate for web use, which is about all I do on them. Holding them up is an Ergotron LX Dual Desk Mount Arm, which also doesn't work how I expected. I should have got the LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm instead. I might take the one I have now, to the cave and use it there with my laptop and then get a new one for home.

Right next to that desk is another one (so I have a nice 3M long work bench sort of set up, which just ends up as a dumping ground more than a bench):

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2628/4062753150_85459d8354_o.jpg

There's my 13" MacBook Pro, a gaming PC that I don't really use much and should really sell while it's still worth something, three P4's I am attempting to find a use for (got 6 of them really cheap, but don't really need them).

Behind the screens are a set of Bose MusicMonitor Desktop Speakers like this

I have to admit, the sound coming out of those little speakers tops a few of my friends speaker sets which are twice the size and close to the price of these.

this is a result of boredom during STUVAC when I should be studying for end of semester exams heheh

pretty much every semester I end up changing my room somehow!

also added a apple wireless keyboard and an mx revolution courtesy of members on these forums :)

left screen is running off computer on the floor (controlled via Input detector - couldn't get synergy to connect for some odd reason)

other 2 off dell xps m1330 on the right which is overheating like crazy and thus has to run upright like that (need to give Dell a call!)

I know there are no apple computers yet but I plan to buy a macbook pro in the new year (hopefully after a spec rev in January)

looking to get a tri monitor stand and hopefully 3 identical 24" monitors - any ideas?

enjoy

Kinda, sorta, a home office (well, business premises are the front half of the building anyway)... this is where I do my stuff:

http://img.skitch.com/20091103-cs15i4f6bud9gc8ge3t8pr4jyb.preview.jpg (http://skitch.com/glacierdave/nf74d/iphoto)
Click for full size (http://skitch.com/glacierdave/nf74d/iphoto) - Uploaded with plasq (http://plasq.com)'s Skitch (http://skitch.com)

MacBookPro front and centre, an XP desktop on floor running to monitor beside MBP. The monitor (and a kb/mse) are on a KVM that also goes to a couple of servers). Using a Logitech MX5500 bluetooth kb/mse connected to the XP box but using SynergyKM to share them across to the MBP.

Sitting to the right of this is:

Click for full size (http://skitch.com/glacierdave/nf74s/iphoto) - Uploaded with plasq (http://plasq.com)'s Skitch (http://skitch.com)

A rack that has all my CAT5 cabling (around 60 cables to sockets around the building - used for network and phone system), switches and servers (an SBS box and a WHS box).

Some day I'll clean up the desk area (and the patch leads).

Mid-2007 iMac, rest of the specs are in my sig. Late 2008 MacBook Pro, purchased just 3 weeks out from WWDC 2009! Rest of the specs are in my sig. And my MBP is resting on a incase sleeve. What's not seen here is a 320GB drive I use for media storage and photo backup.

Here is my setup, pretty good for a 15 year old I think. :)

I thought the cashed up kiddies would come out.
When I was your age(s) I had a Pentium IV Williamette based Compaq D510 which now is a server (XP). got that for $200.

then when I was 16 I bought the original 12" iBook G3 (dual USB, 500Mhz 384MB RAM) I got that for $250!

and later on in early '07 i got a PowerBook Ti DVI (antimony)1Ghz. for $250 it had a 'broken backlight' it was just a dodgy cable.

my point you don't always have to go spending all your green going new to get the best. sure mine were ancient but still they did a good job and I only recently bid farwell to my precious iBook. :crying:

Just got my new second monitor in the perfect spot.

I don't know how I lived without dual screens now!

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b322/chaosboi/IMG_5132a.jpgAmen to that brother!
Nice setup btw, how did you do that labeling?

My little workspace:
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6401/p1140022.jpg
(Normally the computer is on the couch or bed with me and not in front of the TV)
I have something similair going on and in a week or so there'll be a G4 Mac Mini joining the party in the lounge for my mum to use.

First post and where better to start.
here is where i live
http://whodaman.com.au/images/desk.jpg
and this is my server.
http://whodaman.com.au/images/server.jpg
once it has been running for a couple of weeks I will get rid of the keyboard mouse and monitor and just remote to it when needed.
I just Jizzed in my Pants! nice set up what specs are your Mac Pro's/ G5?

this one... will be fiance when i save up enough for the ring though
damn those sparkly things are expensive Same here.
I'm currently building her a Mac Pro bludgeoning G4 Quicksilver. money is very tight though and i need a Dremel or similar to get into some of the areas so I can do a little grinding. speaking of which does ayone have a dremel or other small cutting device I could borrow/make use of?

i'm more interested in your shoe collection, looks like you have a few pairs there.

http://gallery.me.com/kpsomotragos/100290/IMG_1334/web.jpg?ver=12565262160001

i collect sneakers too, just hit 90 something pairs.
my new faves which i picked up i Singapore about a month back...Puma Moth Kings
Puma Moth King in Monster Collection (http://www.widefashion.com/puma-shoes/puma-moth-king-in-monster-collection)I knew that this would come after me again and strike me down with invisible forces, lots of shoe fanatics on here.

You people with clean desks still make me sick:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2528/4061962463_5c18164c81_o.jpg

Right next to that desk is another one (so I have a nice 3M long work bench sort of set up, which just ends up as a dumping ground more than a bench):

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2628/4062753150_85459d8354_o.jpg

There's my 13" MacBook Pro, a gaming PC that I don't really use much and should really sell while it's still worth something, three P4's I am attempting to find a use for (got 6 of them really cheap, but don't really need them).Aargh! You're Doing it Wrong! just get the new stand it'll make things a million times better and you'll be able to appreciate how good those monitors really are in all their full 1080pness.

hehe, nice workbench there decryption.
use the P4's as folding or servers or even just use them as foot rests.
what's the specs on the Gaming Rig? I might be interested.

This year was my first year so I loved it. I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture but I was right on Panorama rd. Great weekend, my mates an I set up couches, beer fridge and music just outside. Had a good fun watching and listening to the races and revelling with the crowds as the walked past.

It was also great watching the Air Force Roulettes and the F18 do their routine as right above my cottage was were they were doing a lot of the turning and preparation for the flyover of the track. The F18 went vertical straight above my head. That was awesome

The only bad part was 9:30 am Sunday. In bed asleep after a big day/night on the drink, the F18 flew overhead. Jesus Christ I thought the world was coming to an end. Never jumped out of bed so quickly.

I like that sign too, got it Seattle, so random.

DAMN IT! Now i'm gonna have to change my Pants!
Holy Mackerel! lease oh please give us a rundown!
Awesome diggs too, looks great.

The office setup is 2 x first gen 8-core Mac Pros. The one on the right is my main machine. It has 16 GB of RAM, an 8800GT, 1 x Samsung 1 TB RAID drive, 1 x Samsung 1 TB standard drive and 2 x 500 GB Seagate ES 2 Enterprise drives. It's connected to the 30" Apple Cinema Display. The Pro on the left drives the 20" ACD and the 20" ACD on the right is for work (connecting it to clients' Macs.)

Networking is multihomed with two ISPs, Comcast business grade cable and LMi ADSL. The primary router is a Dlink DFL 700 business grade router. The secondary router for the ADSL is a Linksys WRT-54GL running Tomato. There are 2 x Netgear GS 116 16 port gigabit switches, the Comcast cable modem, ADSL modem, Linksys and Dlink routers and an Airport Extreme under the desk. On top of the desk is a Netgear GS 108 8 port gigabit switch for quickly connecting clients' Macs to the LAN and Internet. There's a Decco DAC+Integrated amp for driving headphones and the Design 4 speakers attached to the wall.

Pictured in the closet is a Midwest Atlantic rack which is on rails and can slide out and rotate 180 degrees. On the top shelf is a Mac Mini + Stardom quad interface enclosure with a Samsung 1 TB RAID drive within. It's my music server which is connected to the Logitech Transporter -> Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC -> Arcam AVR 600 receiver -> Paradigm Signature reference speakers pictured here:

http://macdave.com/tmp/hi_fi_raw.jpg

On the shelf beneath the Mini is a Control4 HC-300 home automation system which is basically a fancy Debian box. You can read about Control4 here:

Control4 Home Automation and Home Control (http://control4.com/)

It controls all the lighting and some of the AV gear in my place with scheduling and remote control over virtually everything. Below the HC-300 is a Marantz DVHS player (digital VHS.) It does 1080p and approaches Blu-ray in quality. On the bottom shelf is all the power conditioning stuff, Richard Gray chokes and another network switch which is connected to the rest of the LAN.

The rack is a work in progress. I'll be adding more shelves and a home surveillance system to it at some stage. Also, some of the gear pictured in the living room (the stuff to the left of the cabinet) is going to go on that rack. Ultimately, i intend to put a security gate behind the door to that closet as it will house a DVR for home security/surveillance.

Thats my i7. Got a 1TB HD and an EyeTV Diversity down the back.

nice setup. one question, how does your eyeTV remote work if your diversity is hanging out the back? or is the signal strong enough, or do you control it via the new Apple remote. Is there any special setups required?

I don't use the EyeTV remote. Depending on whats closer I'll either use an apple remote, my iPhone or just grab the magic mouse off the desk. Even if you have the EyeTV stick plugged directly into the iMac the signal is still blocked by the iMac itself, making it all but useless.

I thought the iMac would block the signal. So did you have to do any special settings for the Apple remote to work in sync with EyeTV?

i'm controlling EyeTV via my wireless keyboard at present. Anyone been able to get their  remote to work with their EyeTv?

Zanorath
12th December 2009, 08:52 AM
The reason that your Apple remote isn't working is because of a change in the way Snow Leopard handles the remote input. Elgato needs to update EyeTV to accommodate the change. If you wish to go back to the way Leopard handled the remote you can get a stand-in app that enables that. I can't remember its name, but its made by the same people that make Remote Buddy; it's a part of that software that they've released for free.

Sorry for the mess. I am going to work on cleaning up the wires. We mainly use this for web surfing, working and printing documents.

Specs: HP Athlon XP 3000+, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6200, 250GB Hard drive.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/4179056163_e23b74a712.jpg

In the corner of my bedroom, I have this small corner desk setup to surf the web, do some downloading, and e-mails before I sleep or get up in the morning. The HP DV2-1030 is light and thin enough to take to bed and watch some anime before going to bed.

Specs: Athlon Neo 1.6Ghz, 4GB RAM, 12.1" Screen, 320GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/4179401949_3b03b60bfc.jpg

When I need to get some serious work done, I goto the dining table and boot up my MacBook Pro. A minimalist workspace but there are no distractions. Dining table is usually clear when it isn't mealtime so it's easy to focus.

Specs: MacBook Pro 15" 2.53Ghz Unibody, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, Snow Leopard.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2569/4179817658_3dd32d680e.jpg

HP Mini 110 used to quickly jump on the web and e-mail while watching TV. I also take this thing with me on vacation since it's so light and does it's job very well. I dumped the Vaio P for this and haven't looked back since.

The mini mainly resides in my car so I can easily pull it out when I'm at a coffee shop or wherever WiFi is available

Specs: Intel Atom 270, 10" Screen, 2GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive

Mid-2009 MacBook Pro connected to the Dell UltraSharp U2410 monitor via Displayport.
Dell 8300 underneath the desk (keyboard on under-table tray), wireless mouse (not in picture) connected to one of the DVI ports on the U2410.
Mac Mini connected to the other DVI port on the U2410.

Next on the shopping list - stand for MBP together with a wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse.

Loving the Dell UltraSharp monitor more and more - it's the first LCD monitor I have experienced that remembers the settings by input thus I can have the Dell 8300, Mac Mini and MacBook Pro calibrated separately.

I bought it from Computers Now Computers Now > Home (http://www.compnow.com.au/). It cost $49.95. I had an iSkin on my previous keyboard and it lasted really well and kept the muck out of the keys. A good investment in my view.

Yeah, I know, I don't really see the back (although anyone walking past can) and hadn't done anything about it.

Almost everything about it is re-purposed from somewhere else so it's sorta cobbled together right now. Once I'm happy with it, I'll probably sit down and design/build some enclosures to hold things and keep the cables tidier.

if you're in Melbourne Streetwise stock them....

Streetwise Australia: Speakers (http://www.streetwise.com.au/speakers-c-43_109.html?sort=2a&filter_id=345)

otherwise you can call the distributor directly (his name is Cameron)...

Maxmedia || contact us (http://www.maxmedia.com.au/maxmediacontactu.html)

they're great speakers :)

That is indeed an A380 a 1:200 one which replaced a 1:400 one I had before.

At some point, if suddenly someone decides to give me a bundle of cash I'll get one of these (http://www.amalgamcollection.com/en/product/product_detail.php?SKU=AF284F1&list_type=&list_value=&PHPSESSID=5c2d49953a4a3fba97629d79d33ff893) :)

I have a model porsche 911 GT3 RS, can't remember the scale but it looks quite good on my desk, I also have quite a model plane collection which includes a QANTAS A380, Boeing 787-800 these are both click together ready painted ones, and the others that are build yourself include a Piper J3 Cub (took 3 months to build), a Spitfire, F13 Tornado raptor, F11

Before with my G4 in the front room, sharing a monitor with the family PC. Obviously this was a problem if I needed to use the mac while someone was on the PC.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/heartfield/Mac/Setup01.jpg

Now I have my new iMac set up in my bedroom coz I finally routed a cat6 cable under the house to the router in another part of the house. Happy days if this stupid machine wasn't randomly shutting itself down all the time. The new Logitech Mac keyboard and MS 5000 mouse are sweet. Rabbit ears are for the EyeTV which is I can get all channels except Channel 9 and Go! 99 (Sucks coz I like Seinfeld and Get Smart).

Very nice looking listening rig. What speakers are these?

Paradigm Titans. I wanted Atoms, as these are too big. Actually, I really want Harbeths but anything imported is massively over-priced here and I need a better amp than a Parasound Zamp.

is that a stax headphone setup i see? And some grados?

Yup.

Believe it or not I've actually cut down on the amount of gear here. The rig is mostly Audio-gd gear (created by an interesting Chinese guy who makes Krell/Mark Levinson-grade gear at a fraction of the price). The Grados are HF-2s and a highly modified pair of 325i/MS2s known as "Symphones Magnums" with much better drivers and aluminium air chambers. There are also Sennheiser HD-800s on the right. It was worth it though, for me at least, as the reproduction of vocals and instruments is mind-blowing with any of these headphones.

Anyway, haven't posted in a few months, and got a new desk today (Ikea Jonas with drawers, was on clearance to so I saved 120 bucks). Excuse my crappy photo taking skills, the LEDs behind the mac do look a lot better in person.
