Snow Leopard hits your Mac on August 28th. Crappy box art and all. An actual Snow Leopard on the front? Really Apple? Jesus H. Christ... Anyways, 10.6 comes on the 28th of August and you can pre-order it now via the Apple Online Store.

It's only AU$39 for Leopard users! Or score the Box Set, which includes iLife '09 and iWork '09, as well as Snow Leoaprd, for $229. For the low-down on Snow Leopard and what it brings to the table, visit Apple's Snow Leopard website. Pre-order now and it will be delivered to your front door on the 28th of August. No lining up or sweaty, geeky, masses for you.

If there's any stores doing midnight launches or anything crazy like that, let us know.

Sweet. Pre-ordered, and if my 10.5 experience repeats itself it should be on my doorstep Friday morning, and ready for me to install when I get back from work.

PS: There's nothing wrong with the box art. Jeez, some people will whinge about anything.

So, those of us not wanting to use a CC,
can we walk in to an Apple store, or resellers store & pick it up on Friday?

The way it's worded doesn't seem to indicate it will be on shelves on the 28th.

PS: There's nothing wrong with the box art. Jeez, some people will whinge about anything.

It's too literal. It's called Snow Leopard and has a photo of a snow leopard on it. I prefer the big X design of the previous releases.

Edit: It's not really a big issue, it's just, you know, obvious. Maybe the big X could be reserved for the major updates like 10.5 was, and 10.7 will, presumably, be.

We in Australia got a pretty good price, $39AUD in comparison to $29USD is heaps good and probably shows that Apple are not really out to make big money out of this.

Here is a bigger version of the snow leopard on the box.

The X was so integral to the whole brand of OS X, seems weird for them to throw it out in this release. The new box is also just a plain box with the disk in a plastic sleeve, unlike the Leopard release.

Oh and thanks n20nine. :p

A$39 - Microsoft go eat your litigation pads. Not only does Apple have a superior product but they also have superior pricing.

But I will have to wait till January 2010, by then the first revision (10.6.1) will have come out anyway and hopefully around the time of the next versions of iWorks and iLife. So I can, maybe, buy them as a boxed set.

Excuse the stupid question, but how does Apple know if I have Tiger or Leopard? Will the 40 dollar version not work if i was to use it on Tiger? I ask because while I have Leopard and will be purchasing the 40 dollar version, my sister is on Tiger and wondering whether if she simply buys the 40 dollar version, it wont allow her to install (I imagine it wont). Is this how it would work?

If you are on 10.4 (Intel) you need to the Mac Box Set.

Option 1:
Upgrade one 13" MBP via the up-to-date program
Cost: $14.95
Upgrade two other mac's (2009 Mini & 13" Unibody MB)
Cost: $69.00 (Family Pack)

Option 2:
Upgrade all mac's.
Cost: $69.00 (Family Pack)

Big tick for Option 2 :p

Hmmm. I'd like to get 10.6 just to get everyone onto Time Machine. We've got 4 Intel Mac's in the family, however two are running 10.4 (and CCC) We only use iPhoto and none of the iWork apps. How many machines can be upgraded with the box set?

I just bought a refurbished computer from Designwyse, which is an authorised service provider, and a gold level service centre, does that mean i should qualify for the above?

If I own 2 macs and my friend also owns a mac, obviously we should get the family pack and split the cost. Will this work ok? And can I copy the disk?

No EDU discount on Snow Leopard. It is $39 for students.

Still cheaper than Leopard was for students.

Your friend is not part of your family/household. They need to get it through retail channels e.g. with a new Mac, up-to-date program, upgrading from 10.4 or 10.5 for $39/Box Set pricing.

im planning on upgrading the HD in my MBP this weekend. Will i need to:
a) install 10.5 first?
b) if i do need to install 10.5 do i need to bring it up to date using software update?

I'm a bit wary of this upgrade process. last time this happened was on 10.2 to 10.3 and all kinds of crazy things happened.

also 10.5 > 10.6 on each reinstall is going to be a bit of a prick. Pity the 10.6 installer doesnt allow you to just enter the S/N of your 10.5 disc.

You can install over the top (upgrade) or erase and install (just Snow Leopard freshly installed).

You won't double up on hard disk space. It will actually save more disk space. Up to 7GB freed up.

Lots of people have used the Up-to-Date program. And you won't be able to walk into the store and pick up a retail copy of Snow Leopard if you qualify for the Up-to-Date (unless you want to fork over $39 instead of $15).

Do it using the proper methods if you are eligible e.g. online/fax etc as per your link before.

The last BlackBook (ever) was introduced in February 2008 (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/26/apple-releases-new-penryn-based-macbooks/). Over a year.

It stopped selling when Apple went Unibody (MacBook) but yes, it could be the 'current' model as of a year ago.

Yep sorry that's exactly what I meant - I didn't realise until after I posted that, that it could have been "current" anytime between Feb and Oct 2008. So yes, he got screwed there with the BlackBook/X3100 graphics.

9400M is listed though, so that's not entirely true.

But how would they benefit from it anyway? My understanding is that the GPU can be used for other tasks. The 9400M is a fairly light processor so I don't see it doing a hell of a lot, particularly when its using shared memory.

The blackbook on the other hand is supposed to have an even lower level processor, so chances are its not worth making support for it.

Of course I'm saying this based on my very limited knowledge and theories.

W2ttsy
25th August 2009, 04:23 PM
its not so much about the usefulness of it, and more so about support. If people start building apps that rely on this technology, then machines that cant support it will be left out in the cold.

Im not complaining about my 1.8Ghz G5 with its Radeon 9650 not supporting it, but a machine i bought last sept should at least support this, even if its pretty much useless.

I'm not 100% sure how this is implemented, but im guessing we will start seeing apps that say "requires openCL" soon?

Thats more a technology they are using rather than something they are implementing. Anyone on any platform with an intergrated graphics chip can't use this tech.

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M is an integrated graphics chip. OpenCL supports it.

With Mac OS 11 coming sometime in the (foreseeable?) future, maybe Apple thought it time to start phasing out the X...

Why would they go to 11, nothing wrong with Mac OS X 10.10, or 10.11, or whatever.

Actually your machine isn't the only model, nor is it even the most recent machine, that isn't supported.

The mac mini which was sold from August 2007 until march 2009 doesn't support open CL either and some of those are as little as 6 months old, we have 2 minis that are of that model (and 1 really is only 6 months old) plus 1 9400m mini that's more recent.

It will make bugger all difference in practice though so I'm not concerned and I honestly don't believe you have anything to worry about either (at least not for 10.6).

The X is OS X is to differentiate the OS from OS 9. Other than that, consider the number after the dot as the version....of which snow leopard is either v6 or v7 depending if you consider 10.0 a valid release or a continuation of public beta.

I don't think he's arguing that. I think he's talking about when OSX finally reaches its end of cycle and Apple replace it with a completely new OSXI or 11 or whatever you want to call it. It could be after 10.5.12 or it could be next depending on when Apple finally decide OSX is done with.

^ From what I can gather it'll detect you've got Leopard installed and will allow you to wipe and do a clean install.

I'm guessing for future reinstalls it'll either detect you've got Snow Leopard installed and let you reinstall or will ask for a 10.5 disc.

one Question ?

I bought two products which come under UP TO DATE program. A macbook Pro and a MINi ......

I bought macbook pro from Myer and Mini from apple in chadstone. Now when i go to uptodate site .. there are two sections to put one for retail stores and one for apple store. So do i have to pay for each one seperately and get two discs ??

is there a family pack for UPTODATE thing..

I had this issue. I needed to fax Apple the Up to date form as well as my receipt. I did this but haven't received an invoice stating that I have "purchased" snow leopard. I emailed Apple to confirm that they received my fax and they stated they did and would post it out to me as soon as it was released. Still haven't received an invoice, so I'm currently holding my breath and keeping my fingers crossed that it arrives.

I think he said something like "lays the foundation for the next 20 years". This could mean several things, including that OS X lays the foundation for the near future as well as its successors.

Then again, Steve might have thought Apple's quest for an OS had finally come to a conclusion, and that switching to Unix ended a decade-long odyssey. In that case it might be OS X till the end of time :)

And in another ten years' time, when nobody remembers any better, they can even claim a 50 year long legacy ;)

Cheers
Steffen.

I'm surprised all you guys are saying it will ship on the 28th and not be delivered. The Leopard release used the same language and was on my doorstep by 8:30am Friday October 26.

If you preorder and don't live in whoop whoop you'll get your disk some time on Friday. Relax. The by in 'ships by August 28th' is very important.

This is clearly the first OSX upgrade for a lot of people here.

It is for me. I've had my OS upgrades with new Macs (PB 10.3, MB 10.4, MB 10.5). First time I've had to buy an OS without a Mac.

The reason, and i'm one of them, have had reason to speak to Apple's Online stores team today, and they have stated that deliveries will leave on Friday. So maybe people in Sydney might get them, but that'll probably be it.

I will wake up on Friday. Give my MBP to my dad. He will take it to work. I will wait until I get the call of 'TNT has arrived'. As soon as I do, I'm leaving school early. I will then send a tweet saying 'SNOW LEOPARD HAS ARRIVED'. I will run to the train station holding my heavy ass bag. I will swipe my smartrider & jump onto the train. I will sit on my chair reading excessively about Snow Leopard. I will arrive at my destination & run to the location in which the Leopard awaits. I will turn on my Macbook pro. I will take many many many unboxing photos. I will then insert the DVD and begin installing. My Unibody Macbook Pro's OS virginity will then be broken. My iMac, on the other hand is a bit of a whore bag. She's been upgraded three times.. Pft.. lol =D

I'll be waking up around 6AM as I normally do. I will take a piss first thing as I get out of bed. I will then sit by the front door, in silence, iPhone in hand, waiting for TNT courier man. AS SOON AS HE ARRIVES I WILL TWEET IT. Once I have tweeted it, I will crawl over to my camera and take approximately 12 photos of the package and the contents inside. I will then insert the DVD into the computer and proceed to lube up. I will start off slow, then get faster as the install gradually completes. Hopefully I can time my climax with the Welcome video that appears once the install is complete. Once I've cleaned myself, the floor, the desk and the keyboard up, I will call my laptop a slut.

Actually, one of the minor benefits of living in St. Albans is the close vicinity to the courier depots. They're virtually all in Tullamarine or Laverton - which means I'm generally in the first lot of deliveries, nice and early in the morning.

I might just ask my mum for a lasagna anyways. I like lasagna.
