An anonymous tipster to Engadget Japanese got a nice surprise with his recent Mac mini purchase: a Snow Leopard install disc. It's a hardware-specific install discs, dubbing itself Mac OS version 10.6, and clearly packing the goods if the screenshots don't lie. This indicates that Snow Leopard is to arrive soon.

UPDATE: As tintinaujapon pointed out, the bloke who got the disc with his Mac Mini is hesitant to install it because he may not be able to go back to 10.5 and that Engadget is anxiously awaiting the build number and details of installation.

I want to know what build it is before I get all JIMP.

If you can read Japanese then you'll find out :)

Alas, no. The build number is not in any of those pictures. All they show is the installer. Not one of them has the OS installed and you need that to happen to find the build number.

The Japanese link said somthing about the build number but it's all jumbled up :(

I saw this earlier. I think it is a fake. Surely would you go to more effort taking nicer pictures as well as more screen shots of actual 10.6 before posting up.

Google translate has left me with the impression that the guy has not installed it yet.

I think it could be real, but it seems more likely to be fake.

It doesn't look like the install screen. I still hope it's real :)

A direct link to the Japanese version would help.

Mac OS X Setup Assistant? I'd imagine that Mac Mini would have a factory installed system on the drive along with the restore disc.

Thanks for posting and PMing me the direct link Nuts4Eva.

The Japanese article says that the bloke who got the disc with his Mac mini is hesitant to install it because he may not be able to go back to 10.5 and the author of the article is anxiously awaiting the build number and details of installation.

I don't see what not. GM was out a while ago so entirely possible they have these printed already foor shipping the day it's released..... and the mini would be just imaged in the factory with 10.5 with whatever latest install dvd is present.

Seems like an error in manufacturing...whoever was putting the box together obviously reached for the wrong pile in install DVD's

I wonder when the whole "FAAAKE" meme will stop...

I wonder when the whole "FAAAKE" meme will stop...

It'll stop when people stop posting blatant screenshots of fakes, that's when.

EDIT: /facepalm. Just call me jumping to conclusions, I now realise he did this on a 10.5 machine. Urgh.

In other news, there's a meme about it now? =/

I purchased my new Mac Pro and got sent from China on 10 Aug, 2009, and got delivered here around 16 August, and the install DVD that came with it was 10.5.6 :(, had to order 10.6 from the Online Apple store and have to wait until it is officially released

Oh my gosh... that's utterly disgusting. I hope you've spoken to a lawyer or something because this kind of behaviour from Apple is just not on! *outrage*

I mean seriously, you've just bought a very expensive bit of kit from them, they've shipped it from China - Why could it not have got the new Snow Leopard disks from Ireland thrown in there early? *sigh* Sloppy work Apple, sloppy work.

And just incase you are wondering.. I'm being a bit tongue in cheek... just a bit
