www.lynda.com has movie and web based tutorials for photoshop. I've always found theirs to be quite good for other programs I've used them for.

www.designsbymark.com has some good little tutorials worth looking at, such as how to create chrome text!

Also, feel free to ask if you can't find anything via google, search or on the other sites mentioned.

You need to use ImageReady for GIF animations. That's what I used for mine :)

A tip when learning Photoshop :: After you've mastered layers, learn EVERYTHING you can about channels. In fact, it might even be worth learning them first.

Glad to see you got that sorted out! Now work on optimmising the palette to bring the file size down. :)

I also wanted to mention an excelent book for beginners:
Design Graphics - Photoshop Studio Skills (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764541765/ref=pd_sxp_f/103-3848484-8027067?v=glance&s=books)

About 60 small projects shown step-by-step in the same format as Design Graphics Magazine's tutorials. No CD, but there's 300+ pages in full colour, so great value anyway.
