Hi there,

I am new to Mac and have been struggling with this issue for the last week or so: there are a few websites I cannot access anymore (such as www.westpac.com.au, www.telstra.com.au, www.optus.com.au and a few others...). As far as I can guess it is not:

strictly *.au website related (or at least I think) because I can access some others *.au websites and some other (just can't think of one right now sorry...) in *.com or *.fr don't work either...
my ISP (iinet) as the websites mentioned above work from my PC when I connect it from home.

Below the result from a PING on the first 2 websites in the list above:

PING www.westpac.com.au (203.24.6.90): 56 data bytes
36 bytes from TenGigabitEthernet7-1.ken29.Sydney.telstra.net (203.50.20.41): Communication prohibited by filter
Vr HL TOS Len ID Flg off TTL Pro cks Src Dst
4 5 00 5400 0ea6 0 0000 38 01 978d 10.0.1.4 203.24.6.90

PING www.telstra.com.au (144.140.108.25): 56 data bytes
--- www.telstra.com.au ping statistics ---
37 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

I have this issue from both my iMac and my Macbook Air, on which I have set up no firewall or other specific filter. I am using a (iinet) Belkin modem, on which I have desactivated the wifi to use a TimeCapsule as a wifi router. I get the same issue when I try to connect from Safari, Firefox or Chrome...

I have exhausted all tips and tricks I have from the PC word... thanks in advance for your support to resolve this issue!

Could you do a traceroute to the sites also? Will help us to see where exactly the connection is failing. In terminal type: traceroute telstra.com and then copy-paste the results into here.

Thanks for the prompt reply Exocet!

Now I know what the equivalent of "tracert" command is... Yet I still have no clue where the issue is coming from!

Its odd - your clearly making it through all of the hops to the sites, yet you can't connect to them. I get very similar results too.

What's the exact error Safari gives you when you try to connect to those sites?

Depending on the website / browser, I get:

Safari can’t open the page “http://www.optus.com.au/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.

The connection has timed out
The server at www.westpac.com.au is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

like none of them could find the websites... Some sites are also long to reach at times (this forum for example was 30 min ago...).

Note sure if that's related but I think it all started after I transferred my profile from the iMac to the MacBook Air when I got it last week or so. Can that be linked? (ok, that sounds like a very dumb question I know... but I'm kind of lost here).

Thanks again for your time.
Cheers,

Toche

I would try a different DNS server address. It sounds like a DNS issue to me.

Call iinet and get them to check whether you are accessing their recommended DNS server address. If you are, ask if you can try an alternative address. If not, you could try OpenDNS to determine whether this is the issue.

Not sure what I did apart from updating the Time Capsule's firmware and playing with the router settings... but it's back to normal now.
I now know what my parents feel when they are in front of a computer :o
Thanks Exocet and Graigc for your time and support ... and sorry for the inconvenience guys!
