I somehow have around 5 copies of every font on my system scattered in umpteen folders throughout my computer.

Being a designer, this means a lot of duplicate fonts. A lot of duplicate fonts means that I have been having a few font clashes leading to system crashes or force quits.

Can anyone recommend someone in the Sydney area who can have a look at my machine and delete all the duplicate fonts creating just one font folder and have them all properly managed by FontExplorer X Pro?

I have an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS 10.5.8

Okay here's what you're gonna do mate..

Go to your preferences in Font Xplorer..

Make sure manage font folder is ticked, in your case you better tick "move" instead of "copy". I have copy set as I use some advanced settings..

Make sure to take to the time to properly sort and organise your fonts AS YOU DRAG THEM IN. Sorting 5000 fonts later is a pain in the ass. Trust me. An example of my handiwork:

You will notice once you drag fonts to the Linotype app, they will be sorted in "user name" > FontExplorer X > Font library

Make sure these preferences look like so:

The, again in the Linotype app, go to tools > clean systems font folder

Nuke.. er I mean, clean em

As the window says, it won't delete your default system fonts.

Done.

Thank you so much for going to all the effort to help. This looks like it will do the trick.

I just have one question. I am tracking down the fonts on my computer and dragging them into their relevant sets inside Font Explorer. As I do this I am told "Font with the same path already imported in FontExplorer X Pro" I am then given the option to Use already imported font, Remove font from FontExplorer X Pro and import again or Skip this font.

I am thinking that I am to chose "Remove font from FontExplorer X Pro and import again" but upon checking the fonts in Users/XXXXXX/FontExplorer X/Font Library it doesn't look like it has copied across.

I am assuming that it has to so that when I nuke all my fonts FontExplorer will know to check in the above folder to get them all back??

Thanks so much for the help!

Don't stress, it's there. The name of the font might not correspond with the filename of the font, so you might be looking in the wrong folder or likewise.

You're dragging the fonts into the app, not the actual respective folders. It organises everything for you - just as itunes sorts and manages music (if you let it).

You want these settings for importing:

You'll never have to worry what's imported and what's not. This is the least stressful and smartest choice.

Now heres my next chunk of wisdom:
When you start deleting fonts from the app as you clean up your collection.. you can clear those fonts from their respective fonts folders by going to Tools > Clean manage folder

Simple really

I see what you mean. My only problem is that I have already imported them into FontExplorer and somehow have managed to end up with around 5 different font folders.

At the moment I am finding these folders and dragging the fonts contained into them and dropping them within the FontExplorer (FE) window. I am then given the already imported warning window. I have searched for a couple of the fonts that I have tried to drop into the FE window and it doesn't seem to be going into the default folder. It is remaining in the original folder scattered on my desktop. I have even tried to see when the default folder was modified and it isn't around the time I dropped the font into the app.

My plan is to find all the fonts on my system, whether already imported or not and individually drop them into the FE window. I am hoping this will work like iTunes as you have mentioned and make a copy of all my fonts in the default FE folder. I was going to back up this folder and then delete ALL of my fonts within FE and then reimport the the backed-up folder.

Am I going about it a ridiculous way? I always seem to take the hard way which is probably why I have ended up with so many duplicate fonts :)
