Go look at the South-East Freeway or Sandgate Rd in Albion - red, orange/yellow and green overlays to show how congested the road is.

Excellent!

Green line = good traffic
Red line = bad traffic

:)

Now if only we could add transit info..

To quote Google's Blog (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/stuck-in-traffic.html)

If your route shows red, you're looking at a stop-and-go commute; yellow, you could be a little late for dinner; green, you've got smooth sailing.

Apparently the cities are providing Google with this information.

This is awesome. I'm curious as to why it's only on some roads though - and not even major ones in some cases.

According to the legal notices page in their app Google gets all their real-time traffic data from CenNavi (http://www.cennavi.com.cn/en/en/index.php).

Might have to alter my plans a bit :-)

I can only find red lines. No lines in the CBD at all though, which isn't very helpful. But nice start.

Next thing they need to do is add transit directions for buses and trains in Sydney (do they have this in other states?).

Beau

Yeah, Adelaide and Perth have transit (buses and trains) info, very handy. :)

Is it accurate?

This could be another thing I need to lobby the State Govt for. Donnie Darko knows what I'm talking about ;)

Beau

Well, Adelaide has transit info, why not traffic info too? :p

All data is supplied by Adelaide Metro so it's as accurate as the pamphlets/timetables that they have. ;)

Gave it a bit of a test-drive this morning on the Riverside Expressway. Pretty accurate - the first merge is always hell (four lanes into one lane before then merging onto the REX).

Google Map of the area:
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/9416/img0166.png

Traffic shots along the way:

Now, it looks pretty clear which is true however the traffic was running under-speed. I was averaging about 40-50km/hr even though that stretch is 80km/hr. I found it to be pretty accurate for the conditions. I noticed that there were more roads available this morning than there were last night, so hopefully some of the more major arterials are added in soon.

Bonus shot of that hellish merge:

When I was living on the Sunshine Coast and had to go to Brissy, this was the one place I hated having to go. No matter what time of day it was it was always a bitch…

You don't need a lobby group. Just submit your ideas/complaints through this link:

This, combined with Twitter, is how I managed to bring the folding bikes issue to Nathan Rees' attention. (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/23/70892-twitter-advocacy-folding-bikes-nsw-state-govt.html)

Before you post saying its not active in your city read this bit.

Google has disabled the traffic feature in Australia.

As per the earlier comments in the thread, it was an experiment only and has been switched off. It's a good sign that they're testing it though, it means we might actually get the real service one day.

I doubt it, Google generally doesn't announce additions to their service at Apple events ;) Especially not something this minor (to Google).
