Just found this handy little utility which automatically detects commercials while EyeTV is recording a show. It installs a plugin for EyeTV and will mark the ads, so after the recording is complete you can go into the editor and compact the show, removing the ads.

etv-comskip - Project Hosting on Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/etv-comskip/)

The only thing you might need to do is, for each set of ads, move the starting marker back a few frames (in "fine" mode) to remove the splash/title screen they show every time they lead into an ad break.

In the Readme file it also explains how to automatically mark your pre-existing recordings, which you can then compact from within EyeTV.

Enjoy :)

yep i give it 2 thumbs up. mark commericals and comskipper are good, when they work. I have found some channels arn't putting in black frames between the show and the start of the ad's, and when they do this, the software cant see where an ad starts and ends..
