After discovering the Riven X project (http://www.devklog.net/rivenx/), there was a brief discussion whether it would be possible to do the same with the iPhone.

I decided to contact Cyan Worlds (Myst series developer) and see if they had anything cooking. Below is the reply I got:

"Thanks for your support! Yes, we are looking at Riven. There are a couple of technical issues but we are investigating work-arounds..."

These technical issues were also touched upon with the Riven X project.

Looking forward to Riven on the iPhone!

Like how to fit all 4 gig into Apple's max iPhone app size of 1 gig?

But would be so nice, its been ages since I've been to Riven.

If they still have all of the original source video, they could re-compress it into a modern, efficient format (H.264?).

Also, remember the screens are 640x480 - These will also be cropped /shrunk appropriately to fit into the iPhone format. Again, maybe a light compression will be run on these to get the sizes down.

You would want to keep the audio at least the same as it was originally. This shouldn't be compressed one bit as audio clues were big in the Myst franchise.

I'm sure Riven will fit in 1GB. Either that, or Cyan Worlds can petition Apple for an increase in the max size :)

Possibly yes, newer codecs, aac audio, small screen size, all good ways to shrink it down.
