Many of the PCI-e cards nowadays, are quite cheaper.
I was looking into finding one for my late 2005 model G5 Dual Cpu powermac. It's got apple stock GeForce 6600 nvidia card in it, adding a newer pci-e card should put up its performance considerably, I'm hoping.

Wouldn't some of these ati/nvidia pci-e models (if any) video cards, currently available in local stores, would actually work with macs ?

Methinks we Dual Core owners are still stuck on Mac Edition cards alas at the much dearer price. Here is the current card at an eBay listing:-

Mac Edition nVidia GeForce 6600 256MB PCI-E Video Card - eBay Graphics, Video TV Cards, Apple Components, Apple Computers Components, Computers Networking. (end time 05-Jul-09 20:58:32 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Mac-Edition-nVidia-GeForce-6600-256MB-PCI-E-Video-Card_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZQ7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q 3a1Q7c294Q3a30QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14Q2el1262QQ hashZitem3ca2707a6bQQitemZ260423318123QQptZLHQ5fDe faultDomainQ5f0QQsalenotsupported)

A nVidia Quadra FX4500 is also listed at AU$691.00 so I am staying where I am.

I think you're a tad confused as you can't pick up any PCI-E graphics card from a local PC store and expect it to work; all Mac graphics cards (including those in Intel Mac Pros) require a compatible Mac ROM to work. Finding and flashing over a suitable card was relatively straightforward in the "AGP" days but it seems doing the same for many PCI-E cards is more difficult.

If I were you I'd look out for a stock Apple ATI Radeon X1900XT; a good performance increase over a 6600GT, quiet and still a very capable card.

The X1900XT won't work in a PPC, I thought?

In any case, the 7800GT is available for PCI-E G5s, and you can flash a PC version fairly easily.

I have an RadeonX1900 in my PMG5 - and it has a peecture of a sexy leetle anime girl on it!

I only got it in order to allow the G5 to connect up with DVI-I Display units, as it came with VGA connections only.

See here though (http://www.macworld.com/article/53715/2006/11/radeon.html).
