As the title suggests which hitachi drive should i upgrade for my mbp.
It's a little older 2.2mhz version.
has a sata 160gb 7200rpm drive in it now with 1.5gb interface.

Where to go now ?

you don't need to get a hitachi drive in particular, just any notebook sata hdd will be fine (as long as it's 9.5mm in height which most are). i've got a 320gb 7200rpm WD in mine and it's been great.

7K320. Absolutely robust, brilliant and above-all reliable piece of technology. Do your MBP proud.

try the hitachi 500gb 5k500.b drive. absolutely fantastic, speeds comparable to the 7k320. very very silent and does not produce much heat. i was in-between the 7k320 and the 5k500.b drive, chose the 5k500.b, no regrets.

I've got a Hitachi 7200rpm 320GB and if I had to choose again I'd go for the extra space of a 500GB 5400rpm drive. There are no significant heat or vibration issues (which I was worried about with the 7200rpm drive) but no dramatic performance gains either.

If you don't need the extra space right away, you might consider waiting for the cheaper, higher capacity crop of solid state drives to emerge.

I could get a 500GB 2.5" 5400 RPM Seagate HDD for $139 with free shipping, and trust me, Hitachi can't hold a candle to Seagate in quality, warranty or support. Or, if you want a 7200 RPM drive (which you honestly don't need in a laptop; the speed gains are negligible and you pay the price with battery life and HDD stability/longevity) you can go with a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black for $125.
