Hey Guys,

This is the first bit of apple kit that just hasnt worked from day 1 for me. I have set it up on my network, i added it to my itunes library that is constantly online and got the ATV to sync with my photo's and selected tv shows.

At this second the ATV in the other room is on, it is connected to my wifi network and under computers my shared library is there but greyed out. ( unselectable ) and the ATV is not visable on my itunes devices list.

I have no firewall software, itunes is on, wifi is on.

If i go out to the other room on the atv, and go to add another shared library, it gives me a number, i count to 10 seconds and sometimes my shared library comes back online, but sometimes it doesnt.

if someone can see some settings i have fudged please let me know, ive re-read the handbook 3 times now and cant see where im going wrong. The only thing i get very rarely is a warning when I sync the atv with new tv shows and pictures is that the 3689 port cant be accessed.

here are my settings..

Mate, all I can say is that when I had Apple TV on Wifi I had the same problem, would only show up in iTunes device list half the time, however when I tested it on ethernet, no problems whatsoever, except for the fact I had an ugly long ethernet cable going through the room!

Mines on wifi. No problems. Although that doesn't help you. Maybe because i live in a little Apple bubble.... mmmmm cosy in here.

Here are my settings.

- same size apple tv, same version number, same custom sync and un-ticked show only synced items box.

- I have disabled automatic syncing. Pissed me off after a while, due the way i handle all my media.

Turned the power on and off? Simple, but surprisingly effective.

Using a pc or mac?

What type of router are you using?

Checked all the settings on the apple tv itself? The about section as well as the network section in settings?

ps. I'll be removing these images in about a month from my dropbox folder. just a note for future readers. Pm me if you want my settings.

turned the power on and off, and it does come back online for a day or 2, but without an on-off switch its abit of an arse to do.

Using a mac mini connected to a 1tb hard-drive

getting the mini to pump out a shared wifi through airport with a wep and the atv has the code

network section has full signal, got the atv to do a self diagnostic, it said it was fine..

any other thoughts ?

ps here is the "greyed out" library on the atv that is unselectable.

i googled this last night. Found that one fix is to set your firewall to only allow specific connections. Then remove itunes from the list and then add it again.

Apparently, every now and then it screws up after an update.

So the mac mini is providing the wireless network.... Not sure if that's a problem.

Try setting the wireless security to WPA instead of WEP. It's better security, and every now and then these little changes work for some unknown reason.

I had my 1tb drive connected to my mba and it would work most of the time. Now i have it connected to airport extreme.

Is it purchased content, or your own? or a mix?

5000 files, 10 from iTunes store. Will have to give those 2 things a try. Powered down the atv and booted it again, deleted the media on it and started again, got the same port error, left it alone for an hour doing other things, come back and it's sync'n itself but has a triangle error saying it can't verify my iTunes purchases.

Uber gay.

See how we go, thanks for the replies.

I've had that problem with the not being able to verify itunes purchases.

Make sure the apple tv is authorised, and that your internet connection is working properly. Also log into your account in the itunes account before trying to get it to sync again.

If that doesn't work, try de-authorising all the computers linked to your itunes account. You can do this by logging into your itunes account and viewing the settings. Then try re-authorising them all again. You should only have to do this once.

Do you have MAC address filtering on? You may need to add your ATV's MAC addresses (both ethernet and wireless addresses) to the "permitted list" on your network.

hmm but i have no filters on my system, its open until i can get everything to work. Nothing should really be stopping the atv..

with authorised purchase's if the bloody atv would stay connected to my mini i could stream them and not sync them, but its hit and miss if its online when i want to watch stuff...

first real apple product that hasnt worked simply for me.

To me it sounds like your mac mini is having a lot of trouble keeping the connection going.

I'd recommend a cheap wireless router, or the aiport express or airport extreme.

This will also allow for scalability with more wireless devices.
