View Full Version : Failed to burn!!!

19th June 2009, 05:48 PM
Hello everyone,

First time on the forum.
I tried to burn some photos to a DVD, but the burn failed. It came up with this message:
"The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"
Is this a hardware or software issue?
I have had the optical drive replace before but this is the first time i have seen this message.
Other info about the computer
- PowerPC G5, 2 GHz, 1 GB ram, OS 10.4.11
I have also tried using Toast but again the burn fails.
Any help would be great.

I would try a different brand of DVD's, and if that fails call Apple as it is likely to be hardware related.

They did have SuperDrive related problems.

If it does turn out to be a dead drive, It's not an iSight G5, so replacing the SuperDrive is easy to do. Replacement ones are about $50 off fleabay.

Because it's not under warrenty, getting Apple to quote you is a minimum of $90.

You should a cd cleaner and a different brand DVD.

Both worked for me.

Thanks for the input,

I have tried a different brand of disc with no luck.
I have also tried using Toast to burn instead of the burn function in iphoto and came up with the following:
"The disc reported an error:
Sense Key - Illegal request
Sense Code - 0x24
Invalid field in CDB"

Than this:
The key reported an error:
Sense Code - 0x73, 0x03

Than this:
The disc failed to be written"

The same thing also happens in other programs (itunes,iDVD, etc)

I have had a look and replacing the drive looks easy. I don't want to spend the money on a new drive and find out that it is a software issue. The next thing I will try is reloading the OS but have no way of backing up my data.

Again, any help on the matter would be great.
