I have a MacBook built between Feb and March 2008 whose hardware details according to System Profiler are:

Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00

However, there doesn't seem to be a firmware restore CD for this particular MacBook Apple - Support - Downloads (http://support.apple.com/downloads/#firmware%20restore)

and nor is this MacBook listed on the 'EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs' page on the Apple page: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237)

Can anyone explain why this MacBook is left out in the cold?

Or if not how do I email or phone apple to find out what is the story?

These models came before the Unibodies in 2008.

MacBook4,1 does exist. You have this one:
MacBook (Early 2008) - Technical Specifications (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP5)

There is no firmware restore CD for that model. For EFI/SMC, just run Software Update and it should pick up what is required for your machine.

Ring up Apple if you want to ask for an official reason why there's no firmware CD yet. I suspect they are just busy to make one. You should have restore discs with your MacBook.

Yes it definitely exists, BUT:

My MacBook is a 4,1 in Black, however, in the Devices section of the Finder sidebar, it shows a picture of a white MacBook. I think it might be a cross between an early 2008 and late 2008 (MacBook White) models. My system profiler shows:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.31f0
Serial Number (system): **********
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

And Mactracker isn't sure what it is either, it had to ask me.
