can anyone tell me if there are any email clients out there (on either Win or Mac platforms) that allow tagging of messages? (or does this exist in Mail, Thunderbird and Outlook already - if so, where or under what name?)

by tagging i mean the ability to categorise the email messages you receive. for instance, if i have 5 emails from MacTalk members, two of which relate to iPhone applications, one for external HDDs and two others for Macbook Airs, i would have a tag/category count of:

External HDD (1)
iPhone Apps (2)
Macbook Air (2)
Mactalk (5)

if i'm ever searching for emails on a particular topic, instead of remembering key words or phrases or people's names, i could then just select the tag category to further limit the search. sort of similar to how Evernote allows you categories/tag your notes.

does this exist in any shape or form in an email client?

Gmail does this very well, but I'm not aware of a client that supports it in all its glory.

I'll keep an eye on this thread though

On a PC I know that I can tag emails with Novell Groupwise. You'd do this in the "Personalize" settings for each email - it pretty much over writes the subject with whatever you tag it with.

I'm not aware of a Mac version. Though I've never investigated it simply because I find that spotlight works for me

I haven't used it, but a paid app/plugin called MailTags (http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html) for Mail.app might be worth a look.
