I've always wanted a cube, and until recently i haven't had the means to get one.
I discovered a cube for sale in Cash Converters (gouger st, adelaide) and was told on the phone it was an upgraded model which is 800MHz CPU with 1GB ram and 80GB HD. When i got there, i found a poorly maintained 400MHz cube with a 20GB HD for... $2000.

I was kind of mad - being lied to about the price and specs over the phone and all. So I told them $2000 was a laughable price and walked out.

... last night, i was looking around the net, and spotted a cube for sale on ebay. It was still fairly cheap, so i put a bid in - thinking i'd lose. Not 30 min after that, i found another cube advertised in victoria on a refurbisher's website. So i bought it, thinking i could cancel my ebay bid - as it was a very good price. Logging into ebay - i found i couldn't cancel my bid. But i didn't sweat, as a cube would definatly go for more than the low price i bid... or so I thought.

Here i am 12 hours later. I now own two cubes. One is on its way here - the other is waiting for me to give send a mailing address. Both of them cost less than $1000...

So this weekend, i'm thinking of heading into Cash Converters so that i can point at their cube and tell them that i just bought two cubes with better specs for less than the $2000 they expect for theirs.

I'll post pics when they arrive. :)

If you're looking for Macs, Cash Converters ain't the place to go. A few years ago i went in there and saw a beaten up looking PB145B with no power adapter. I asked them for the price. They said it was $295, but "I could get a Pentium laptop, which is faster for an extra hundred bucks". So i gave up and walked out. A few months later i got a whole bunch of old PB bits for free and was able to build one myself for free. :D And mine was probably better than that one, because not only was it in better condition, but its actually a 170 underneath...i installed a daughtercard from a 170, giving it an FPU and the ability to take a stick of RAM i had for it that it wouldn't take with the stock 145B board. :D

LOL. Did they come with any peripherals or not? And what sort of condition did they look like they were in? In 2001 i got an LC475, which blows the socks off the original LC for free!

Good old Crap Converters - the one in Elizabeth St, Melbourne has the dodgiest looking guys going in with stuff crammed in plastic bags for 'sale'. And according to one guy I chatted to in there once, most of these guys come from outer Western suburbs where they know their 'sale' items won't be traced. :(

But nice one on getting two luverly cubes for under $2K. You could use one as a HTPC (keep as stock, maybe overclock to 500, flash a PC ATI 7000 graphics card with TV-out), and upgrade the other one as a very usable desktop machine? What with 80+ GB HDs being so cheap, and SDRAM a little higher $ now but still reasonable, this could be cheaply upgraded to make a very nice machine.

Well, i got 1 of the cubes this morning. Everything is good - Except the DVD rom drive isn't working. I'm waiting on a response from the business who sold it to me, and they have a 90 day warranty, so it should be okay. :/

If they don't honour their warranty, i'm going to have to find a burner, DVD drive or both from somewhere. :) I've been doing some reading, and the slot loading iMac drives work in cubes, so i might look out for one of those - or just save up and get a Superdrive or combodrive brand new.

Still waiting for cube #2.

I'd make you an offer, but am saving spare cash for a trip overseas in a couple of months.

Ha! That's the third time i've been told that. :D

Don't you people realise!!? Cubes are being neglected so you can travel overseas! :P

edit: I also sent that one back to the seller for repairs under warranty this morning. AND i've just payed for the second one - so it should arrive in a couple of days.

Once they're both here - i *may* list one on the trading forums, if someone else hasn't already taken it off my hands.

heya all,

I've had a Cube since they first came out (450 Mhz). Was lucky enough to be at the unveiling at MacWorld Expo (was working for a Mac house then) and came straight home and bought one (much to the distress of my bank account  ).

Its a great machine -- although nowadays a little underpowered. Haven't upgraded the graphics card (ATI Radeon) so it means I can't use Quartz Extreme, but its a wonderful little work horse. Quiet, reliable and looks great. Handles XCode compliations and debugging without a problem -- I'm hoping that I can pick up another one sometime to create a rendering farm.

Go Cubes!

Darren.

I've just noticed that the speakers that came with this cube don't work. That really sucks - i'll get them replaced now.

Comments:

cash converters use a pretty basic formula. The sale price is generally 3 times the price they pay the seller, although I can't imagine they paid $660 for a cube. Since they stopped trading in stolen property (identifiable that is) a few years ago, the quality and variety of stock in their shops has dropped dramatically (who want's stolen goods anyway??). Periodically, however they do try to clear excess unsellable stock and benuine bargains can be had. USB peripherals for 'macs' can be had cheaply if you are in the right place at the right time. I guess they don't know what the 'U' stands for.

Go to the loans section and you'll see the regular selection of people: junkies (characteristic yellow grey complexion), housewives trying to sell the toaster for $100 so they can go to the pokies and pensioners with the broken fishing reels and old spanners because they can't afford food. And, of course, the bottom feeders who do business with them.

Who dream't up cash converters as a business concept? OK, hock shops have been around for years. But someone came up with the idea of a business CHAIN that profits from human misery. Many people (franchisee's etc) who decided to reserve their own special spot in hell is my guess.

Sorry for the opinionated rant. It's an opinion and personal belief ONLY. The truth may be different. Maybe I'm just there at the wrong time.

As disko said: A cube would have to be one of the very few computers that is starting to show a slight increase in value. I'd love to have one on my desk, just to own one. I'm sure I could think up a good use for it given about 5 minutes

I thought i'd update this thread:

Cube #1 Arrived June 19th with a broken DVDrom Drive
Sent back for repair June 22nd
Arrived back from repair - this time with a shattered outer casing
Sent back for repair
Arrived back from repair today - inside a Powermac G5 box :D
I'll give i test tonight when i get home.

Cube #2 June 28th it arrives
Speakers didn't work, and they were replaced
Wouldn't boot into Panther's Installer CDs/Panther installations (via target disk mode)
Tried getting it fixed under warranty, only to be told that "cube's aren't designed to run OS X" Wrote a very comprehensive email on which macs run OSX
Am now able to send it back to get a part repaired - once i know which part is broken
Found out this cube runs Jaguar, and not panther, which makes it look like a Quartz Extreme issue on the video card. I'll test it against Cube #1's vid card tonight. :)
So that's where we're at with the cubes. Here is a page i'll keep updated with very low-quality pics taken with my T610: http://www.appletalk.com.au/cube.php

Considering the trouble Disko's had I'm glad I didn't end up buying the cube. I found a pretty spiffy higher spec'd Powermac that I'm more than happy with.
