1) Don't drop it.
2) Put an Invisible Shield or Bodyguardz on it to prevent micro-scratches.
3) Possibly consider a silicon skin if you are prone to dropping.
4) If you go swimming take it out of your pocket.
5) Don't feed it to a crocodile.
6) I like Flight Control, Wolfenstein, Sally's Salon, Bugdom, Billy Frontier, Enigmo.

What iPhone apps have you downloaded?

Did you get them from the iTunes App Store? (all done within the iTunes Application on your computer).

What version iTunes have you got?

In iTunes 8.1 on a Mac:

click on iTunes > Preferences > General tab, select all relevant boxes to display.

did that (which already had the boxes ticked) i can see it on itunes, but under

> iPhone

and when it expands to show movies, tv shows, music, audiobooks etc etc. There is no applications one

It's a tab at the top of the window. (iPod touch here, should be roughly the same for the iPhone.)

When I select my iPhone as the Device in iTunes, I get a row of tabs at the top:

Summary - Info - Ringtones - Music - Photos - Podcasts - Video - Applications

in this order.

Are you running iTunes 8.1? Mac? Also, iPhone firmware version? Not that it should matter, but I'm starting to wonder whether a re-install may be required.

Apps don't appear as a 'subfolder' of the device, when you click on the triangle to the left of your device name to 'expand it'.

It should be a tab in the main iTunes window, like in half goon's post above.

Spoken like a true curator. I've got a better idea: buy two, one to use and one to preserve for posterity.
