G'day,

Never thought I'd be posting on this side of the site... but hey.

Young guy at work has a 2G iPhone. He says how he hates how hard it is to customise the ring tones on it... The way he does so, is to convert his desired sound file into the required format (nothing I recognised), and then replacing the existing ringtone files on the iPhone with the new renamed file...

He said this also had the limitation of only working for smallish sounds - couldn't be a long sound (ie a song).

Is this the only way? Can I go to work tomorrow and dazzle him with the knowledge of something easier, and continue to usurp his dream of thinking he knows everything...

cheers

you can create ringtones and send them straight to itunes using garageband.

limited to 30 or 40 second clips, though.

and, as for SMS tones, you cant customise them without jailbreaking.

afaik you still can't change the SMS alert tones on the original iPhone. I had one and couldn't. I have since got a 3G and my GF uses the 2G but I still don't think its possible? Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

As for the ringtones for calls, alarm alerts etc. You just need to create a ringtone file (I think 30sec is max? don't quote me) and then play the file with iTunes. it will create a ringtones section under "music, movies" on the left of iTunes. Just wack all your ringtones in there, sync your iPhone and hey presto they come up on your iPhone in their own section.
This may help. (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2585/iphone_how_to_create_free_ringtones/)

If you need other pics from within the phone or anything, lemme know.
