Funky Screenshot Problem

A few days ago i was attempting to take a screenshot of my desktop. I pressed the shortcut as per usual, and proceeded to make my way to the desktop.

Basically the problem is that instead of seeing a photograph of what i just screengrabbed, i get an image full of diagonal black and white lines. I have asked around and no on (the two people i asked) has any idea what might be wrong, or how to fix it, so i was hoping you guys might be able to lend a hand.

Sorry for the time it took for me to get back to you, i was away at work.

Just tried it again after restarting my mac and it seems to be working. It does leave me wondering why it wasn't working in the first place though.

*edit*

It's now giving me that funky error again. I left the mac alone for about 40 minutes, and it logged out of my user. I'm guessing its got something to do with that right?
