Does anyone know if there is an AFL (Aussie Rules) Live Scores Widget?

If not, anyone feel like making one? :P

iSlayer

there isnt one as far as i know and there will not be one anytime soon i dont think.
the afl.com system is very hard to work with as urls are always changing
yahoo.com.au is also very hard for the same reason

Not sure there is a great need either.

From AFL.com you can call up a live window which shows scores from all games live and played, together with a graphic of last goal and live stats on all players.

99% of widgets' info is available online in some form or another.

I hardly think that's a case for not developing one.

You are correct however I think the issue here is that the Widget would not be able to provide the detail of the AFL window (which is almost a widget any way and can be kept open without being at the AFL site).

The detail may not interest me, though.

I reckon a simple widget showing the current live scores of matches would be great. Too bad if I'm the lone ranger... :unsure:

No, you're not on your own, I'd like to see a widget like that. That's 2 people :D

make that three. The AFL site is slow with all that flash whohar. I just want the scores! maybe that is why they put all the flash stuff in, to make it so much harder to mine data from it.

Also a widget which lets you see the upcoming games of the round, I don't think this would be that hard because the data only needs to be inputted rather then getting the information from a website.

I also like the idea of an AFL widget (or two!)

I personally find the afl official website terrible!

:)
Thanks

that wont happen if you keep losing to teams like collingwood....

The widgets got my vote, definatley, the problem with it would be the continual bandwidth usage when updating all of the real-time games.
but yay for the person who can do it :D

well im happy to make a widget of the west coast mascott beating the stuffing out of the port adelaide mascott :)
but apart from that im not going to help on this one
the best you can get is a widget that shows the games for each round.
id consider that but no way im i going to do a live score widget

What about "just" the scores at the breaks?? More do-able?

bobos813

islayer,

I would love a "next round" widget, maybe you could include all the rounds and have a drop down box to select different rounds. Make my planning of my weekends so much easier.

It would be pretty damn cool, and there must be some raw feed which powers the flash on the afl site.

Or just showing West Coast with a big "#1" next to it would suffice ;P

You could make a ladder one pretty easy ...

As for a Round one, all the info is there as well.

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=fixture&s...3&m_round_no=11 (http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=fixture&spg=round&m_tournament_id=13&m_round_no=11)

I had considered making an AFL ladder widget but with the AFL website not prodiving any webservices or XML data i think it would be a waste of time trying to write one.

Unless someone wanted to update and host the data on their server and have it get hammered everytime someone checked their dashboard widgets

I'd be happy to host the data on my webserver if anyone wants to help me with the widget. I can do the graphics, but not the backend.

@frenchtoast ... you don't need XML or webservices to get that information ... it's displays on their web page in HTML.

ok so if someone is going to do a round by round wigdet im in.
i dont think doing a "live" widget is the way to go
the matches are set in stone well before the season starts so you can store a text files inside the widget with the data.

Im also up for ladder widget if no one else does it

ok just had a chat with marc and we are going to do an afl widget to show the ladder and upcoming games for each round.
Look for a beta tonight

Is it possible to have a drop down box to select later rounds, say round 20 or 22 so I can check whats happening later on in the season.

That would just make my day.

I don't have the time to do this right now (two weeks of Uni left for this semester - my second last), but....

If you really wanted to do a live score widget, it might be possible.

Firstly: You need to get hold of the afl live score match designation.

This isn't too hard... http://livescores.afl.com.au/flash/round.xml is the xml feed that is used by the live score flash page. Querying it right now produces:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<round number="10">
<match number="1" hometeam="Melbourne" awayteam="Richmond" fixed="10131001" status="C"/>
<match number="2" hometeam="Geelong" awayteam="Fremantle" fixed="10131002" status="C"/>
<match number="3" hometeam="Hawthorn" awayteam="Collingwood" fixed="10131003" status="C"/>
<match number="4" hometeam="Brisbane" awayteam="Kangaroos" fixed="10131004" status="C"/>
<match number="5" hometeam="St. Kilda" awayteam="Sydney" fixed="10131005" status="C"/>
<match number="6" hometeam="Adelaide" awayteam="Carlton" fixed="10131006" status="C"/>
<match number="7" hometeam="Essendon" awayteam="Western Bulldogs" fixed="10131007" status="C"/>
<match number="8" hometeam="West Coast" awayteam="Port Adelaide" fixed="10131008" status="C"/>
</round>

Which gives us the &#39;game number&#39;... ie: for the West Coast V Port game that is the &#39;fixed&#39; value of 10131008.

From there you can grab the game data pretty easily. Just query: http://livescores.afl.com.au/flash/match-10131008.xml

Which gives us a LOAD of game data... just the start of which is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<afl_live>
&#60;&#33;--Concept, design and implementation by Champion Data--&#62;
&#60;&#33;--match_id=232122001--&#62;
<header home_id="150" home="West Coast" home_sms_name="WCE" home_nickname="Eagles" away_id="110" away="Port Adelaide" away_sms_name="PA" away_nickname="Power" ground="Subiaco" rnd="10" date="29/05/2005" time="02:40 PM" match_status="C" home_end="-1" break="N" grlength="175" grwidth="122"/>
<scoreboard>
<quarter q="1" hg="4" hb="4" ag="2" ab="2" period_secs="1860" period_complete="Y"/>
<quarter q="2" hg="10" hb="8" ag="5" ab="4" period_secs="1809" period_complete="Y"/>
<quarter q="3" hg="19" hb="12" ag="8" ab="8" period_secs="2064" period_complete="Y"/>
<quarter q="4" hg="27" hb="17" ag="9" ab="8" period_secs="1772" period_complete="Y"/>
</scoreboard>
<stats team="h">
<player name="Drew Banfield" shortname="Banfield" num="6" id="960636" pos="BP" k="9" h="5" m="5" t="0" ho="0" ff="0" fa="0" g="1" b="0" rankingpoints="78"/>
<player name="Michael Braun" shortname="Braun" num="10" id="970063" pos="W" k="11" h="15" m="5" t="1" ho="0" ff="2" fa="0" g="2" b="0" rankingpoints="134"/>
....

lots more player data and stuff to enable the goal-by-goal animation stuff.
For our purposes the rest is pretty pointless data for a widget, but the <header> and <scoreboard> data isn&#39;t too hard to decipher, and shouldn&#39;t be too hard to use within a widget.

As I said... I don&#39;t have the time right now... but if no one uses the Info I&#39;ve gleaned before I actually have the time I&#39;ll have a go.

iSlayer
1st June 2005, 01:41 PM

well it looks like the widget will have live scores aswell

we might do some kind of beta tonight or we might wait till the weekend so we can add live scores and test properly.

Here&#39;s a really, really, really early layout of the graphics. Please don&#39;t pay any attention to the data in the middle, it&#39;ll be totally different. Plus, it&#39;s that big so that we can fit the info for the game scores and fixture tabs.

Hahahah&#33;

Zeke (and others) :: We&#39;re definitely doing it. We&#39;ve had some other things we&#39;ve been working on, including the entire site revamp for iSlayer.net and a couple of other widgets. It&#39;s been a very busy last couple of weeks and this has meant that we couldn&#39;t spend time on the AFL widget.

Please don&#39;t use any of the graphics posted in this or any other widget thread to build your own widget. We work really hard on them, and only show dev images as a preview so people can see what we&#39;re up to.

I&#39;m sorry for the delay. You guys will be the first to know when we have something.

Maybe they are turning the widget into a green oval... like a playing field&#33;
tabs around the edge where the bench or interchange players come onto the field...

even with faint white lines to mark out the field&#33;
