View Full Version : Mac Mini And Ibook

Hi al

Well after buying the Mini for work and LOVING it , I am now looking at getting an ibook 1.33Ghz

Is the ram the same for both? I bought 1 Gig ram for A$155 for Mini so I am hoping it will be the same ram for the ibook. :-)

How many slots are there for memory in new ibooks?

Is the DDR266 SDRAM called anything else so I can look a MSY pdf prices to see if they stock it.

You know, it might be worthwhile if you checked on Apple's website and their store first. I suspect many of the answers you're after for these kinds of questions will be answered there.

Let us know if you need any clarification on what they list on their site.

The ram used in Ibook is different size to that of Mac Mini. IN this case called SODIMM, which means laptop sized memory.

I believe the Ibooks require minimum PC2100 speed chips. As my Powerbook requires PC2700. If you got PC2700 then it will work just the same, as it will downclock with no problems to PC2100 speed.

The RAM is not the same.

The Mac mini only has one RAM slot, which comes with 256MB and needs to be replaced with what you want (either 512MB or 1GB DDR PC2700 (333MHz) DIMM).
Note: You can also put PC3200 (400MHz) DIMMs into a Mac mini, but it will run at the 333MHz speed.

The iBook has 256MB on the logic board and a free slot where you can put in more memory (either 256MB, 512MB or 1GB DDR PC2100 (266MHz) SO-DIMM).
Note: You can also put PC2700 (333MHz) SO-DIMMs into an iBook, but it will run at the 266MHz speed.

SO-DIMMs are significantly more expensive than DIMMs (around 3 times more).

amni, if you are looking at buying an ibook i have one in the trading section here http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?showtopic=8003.

Its a 14" / 1Ghz / 40GB / Airport / Bluetooth iBook and my reserve is only $1500.

Thats $100 less then a new 12" / 1.2Ghz / 30GB / Airport with NO Bluetooth.

MSY sell a 1GB stick of DDR 400 RAM for $145 if I'm not mistaken. Note, it's not laptop RAM, it's desktop RAM.

ok, thats www.msy.com.au, + if I buy a Mac Mini, and buy this ram, can I get my local apple centre to install it, the one I'm buying it from?

OziMac: That is a terribly unhelpful post. Why not at least post the URLs to which you are referring (product spec pages)?

Also, these pages don't make it exactly clear to the layman that a SO-DIMM is used in the ibook (until you look right down at the bottom).

BTW 512Mb SODIMM DDR (ibook) at msy for $135.
1Gig DDR400 Hyundai (mini) at msy for $132.
