Mac OSX 10.5.6
I am trying to create a new user account, type standard, user name postgres, short name postgres.

This user name is not listed in the list of existing accounts, which are two only, MyAccount (admin) and Guest Users.

When I attempt to save the new account it says the name is already used by another account. If so, why does it not show up in the list?

it's probably a unix thing.

.. make one called Postgresql, perhaps?

Yep it's a user you can't see because the user id NO is below 500 (from memory I may be wrong on that)

it's a default user that osX installs - and it has limited access to the machine due to security issues
This may be of help
