I just got my new lil powerbook (in love).

but, the cd drive grinds away when reading or copying something off it. its really very noisy. Is this common with all Powerbooks, or should i consider having it looked at? its so hard to tell whats 'normal' sometimes untill you ask.

thanks, invisi

Howdy, Im a new 12" PB owner too :)

Tell me, do you have a super-drive or combo-drive?

I have a super-drive and find it makes a bit of clicking then noisy grinding/churning when I first enter a DVD/CD after which it goes quiet. I'd imagine this is fairly normal.

Are you saying your's continuously churns as it reads the disc?

i have a 12 inch power book too

what sort of noise is it? does it sound like metal objects are griding against each other? or some "soft" grinding noise?

my pb made some loud grinding noise when it was trying to read a cd that was badly burnt. other times, i only ever makes a very soft griding noise.

If it does it occasionally when it is searching different sections of the disc, then thats normal. So many people comment on the noise my powerbook makes when its reading a disc :(

If it sounds like a Dot-Matrix printer, then the answer is yes, it is normal. My Combo Drive on my 15-inch sounds the same as a DM Printer. I have not heard any real 'grinding noise' but the combo does sound different to a Desktop Spec Optical drive.

yeah, i think its pretty normal.. it has the 'grind' when it loads, kinda loudish 'whuurrr' when its reading something from the same space (ie playing an audio cd), when i copy something off it is when it 'grinds', and yeah, it sounds exactly like a dot matrix printer.

thanks for your help everyone.
