View Full Version : Back Up Ext. Hdd Hangs! Help!

G'day all,
I done the tiger thing, but a clean install, because I was smart and backed up to an external 80gig HDD on the USB2 socket of an ibook G4.
Everything went across smoothly but all attempts to access it fail.
I've tried the disc repair utility, the info is there, but then the thing just hangs at any access attempt/repair etc. left with a beachball for entertainment.
Can't get it to unmount, restart has no effect, ended up just pulling the connection. The access light works momentarily, and the HDD appears on the desktop, then the beachball again!

Whadda I do?

Does the External HD also have a Firewire coneection?

Did you have the External drive connected when doing the tiger install?

try a different USB port / different computer could either be a problem with USB ports on your computer, controller board in the case or possibly the hard drive.

is it a possibility that spotlight is indexing it?

Unfortunately no firewire. I bought a cheap 80 gig and an external case.
No It wasn't connected during the Tiger install, worth a new install with it connected you reckon?

Tried a spotlight search but NBG

also if you have a spare usb cable laying around you could also try changing that just a thought.

The cable should be good, it worked well tranferring across.

What kind of install should I try to reload Tiger? (with the HDD connected)

First Aid option? verify?

Sorry if I appear a little dim, but this is my first mac, and the first trouble, in over a year!

Won't let me reload Tiger, with the external HDD connected, to correct any errors.

I wonder whether a local PC shop would be able to mirror the drive?

I'm out bush! Closest apple tech's are in Townsville.

Is it a Prolific PL3507 chipset-based USB2.0 drive? They're notorious for not working under OS X (or WinXP for that matter) unless the firmware is updated to the latest version.

Even if it isn't a Prolofic drive, updating to the latest firmware also helps.

Any clues on updating the drivers would be good, there's a few hits on google!

I've searched for three hours!

Might be a stupid question, but have you tested it on another computer?
Or find borrow someone else's ext enclosure and swap you drive into it for testing.

Some times things stop working for seemingly no apparanet reason. Work out where the problem is before trying to apply a fix.

I'd be going out and getting a firewire case to put the drive in.

I reckon you're right, USB has never been as fast or reliable as firewire.

I've given up on drivers, even with an 'IT guru mates logon', we couldn't find any driver fixes!

Appreciate everyones suggestions, yer a helpful mob!
