View Full Version : When Will There Be A Powerbook Pricedrop?

Simple question, when will there be a pricedrop in the powerbook line?

I am really finding it annoying that Australian's pay $400 more on the $2399 powerbook then USA.

I've heard all the "jusitifcations" about the GST and currency changes and all. But the GST is claimed back by businesses thus it shouldn't affect the price of the good itself, plus its 10% not 20%. All world currency changes I don't see why the Australian currency is special. The HK and other country prices are basicallly exactly the same as the US prices. Import tax duties and all that rubbish is also a load of crap, its not like Australia is the only country with import tax.

Looking at other companies I understand they will have 10% more than other countries (understandible because of GST), but Apple has 20% more which is really unfair.

I bet it would cost me less to catch a plane ticket to HK, buy a powerbook and bring it back home.

*Not such a bad idea. A fully blown out Powerbook 12inch will cost $2,987.38AUD in HK while it will cost $3,594.00 AUD here.

A bit off topic but the main question is "When will there be a pricedrop in the powerbook range".

PowerBooks, just like all consumer electronics in Hong Kong are the same price or even less in some cases compared to the states because they have no tax add.

PowerBook $1,970
GST $197
TOTAL $2167
Thats as $233 different. Not exactly $400.

Just a reminder that the exchange rates fluctuate a lot in the 9-12 months Apple will be selling these PowerBooks. Apple Australia price them up so that if the Australia Dollar takes a dive, they won't loose money.

Its called a forward exchange rate ;)

All major importers should be using them.

I'm assuming you salary packaged darknight? :)

Just for clarity, designers, you can only salary package one laptop per FBT year. You can get one for this year, but given that the FBT year started in April, you'll be looking at next April before you can the second, and 10 years from now before you've got all of them (by which time we'll be on to G7 Powerbooks anyway ;)).

It was actually through ebay where the highest bidder retracted from his/her bid and I had a second chance offer emailed to me. I was able to email him and we met and I paid him right there and then after I tested the machine of course.

I was very very lucky to get it.

His reason for selling it so low was he was never able to sell it on ebay at all and has tried several other sites with no luck. He doesnt like the Powerbook at all and hated its GUI along with its software support. Not even his friends would go near a mac machine.

He was pretty much forced to sell it at whatever price he could grab. :P
