Have you tried a reboot? Hold down the home button and power button for about 10/15 seconds until an apple logo appears.

It's really just the same as restarting a computer... every now and again some program (app) will get a bug that slows everything down or the software just bums out for a bit. Give it a quick reboot and things should be all fine :)

Fails to recognise when plugged into the 240v adaptor and also into the USB on the computer?

Has the phone been jailbroken or anything like that ? You can try restoring it.

Have you been plugging it into any non-Apple accessories such as a Car charger/FM transmitter? Some older accessories use firewire charging which has been known to fry iPhone boards.

I have seen this happen to a friends 2G iPhone as he used it a fair bit with his car iPod adapter. Charges fine with a firewire charger but no longer with a USB charger.

Does it still charge the phone though?

If not, the charger could be 'busted' (dead).
