Mother dropped her phone:

It is not insured.
She went to Vodafone and they said 'do your own research on how to fix it'.
What would you do>?

I would contact Apple, pay the $300 or so and get them to replace/fix the iPhone. She should just get a refurbished model from them. Pity your not in Sydney or Melbourne as taking to the Apple store directly would be the quickest way to get it fixed.

http://forums.mactalk.com.au/59/63830-macfixit-australia-featured-product-apple-iphone-3g-glass-digitizer-replacement.html Macfixit posted a special on here as well about replacement glass and digitiser units.

As for what I would do about the mother situation, well that will be up to you. How much do you actually love her?

Go to a Genius Bar and see what they say.

Get another iPhone from somewhere (eg. Optus prepaid) and unlock it. ;)

Would this work:
iPhone 3G Maintenance - Apple iPhone 3G Glass Front Panel Replacement - MacFixit Australia Store (http://www.macfixit.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=648)

It should. Why don't you shoot Macfixit a PM and link to this thread (they are registered on this site).

That'd probably do it - plus instructions from: iFixIt (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone).
