So, you reckon the bloody iPhone dev team would have announced this before we recorded our final show of the year, but they've always been selfish bastards.

Either way, the iPhone 3G appears to have been officially unlocked, The dev tem just need to wrap it up in a Christmas Gooey for all to enjoy...

Dev-Team Blog - 'Tis the Season to be Jolly! - yellowsn0w (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/65126957/tis-the-season-to-be-jolly)

The question remains, why care about an unlock when most iPhone users are tied down to long arse contracts? Well, Mr Smarty-Pants, an unlocked iPhone means much less hassle when travelling overseas for one, and I'm sure you can think of better reasons...

officially

<pedantry>

I don't think that word (http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/official?view=uk) means what you think it does.

Personally, I'd rather do it the official way myself. ;)

True, but those on long term contracts can unlock legitimately for free anyway (at least on Optus anyway). Sure it might take 10 days, but it's one of the first things I did to mine. (Gotta do the wife's when she puts it down for 5 minutes too :P)

What you said +1.
Even if it did take a few goes for them to get it right, Optus did unlock my iPhone at no further cost.
Now if only the iPhone on their network wasn't so flakey... Bloody work BlackBerry 8707G works OK on Optus.

Lovely reference to The (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/quotes) Princess (http://www.uselessmoviequotes.com/umq_p005.htm) Bride (http://video.google.com/videosearch?rlz=1C1GGLS_enAU291AU301&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=the+princess+bride+i+don't+think+that+means&um=1&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title#).

I could watch that movie every day and not grow tired of it. ;) (That's if I had time for that sort of thing. :p ) Thanks for the YouTube-fix. :)

Interesting!

But baseband 2.11.07? How do you check that?

Also, this is only really exciting for non-contract users, because by now I believe most users on contract should be able to unlock for free (well at the very least with Optus).

Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware

2.2 upgraded the firmware to 02.28.00. So if you upgraded put your pants back on and get 'unexcited'

If it's already carrier unlocked why do you care about a software based unlock? :P

Also paid for an unlock here so no issue, but great for everyone else. Unfortunately I'll wager most people will have updated to 2.2 so the unlock as it stands is useless to them. Hopefully a downgrade method will be found, surely it's only a matter of time.

I don't but I know a few people who haven't carrier unlocked but have upgraded to 2.2.

Hi Guys if any one needs the iphone 3G unlocked to work on any network in australia including the "3" three network, contact me. I unlock it with a software so no hardware is involved....
