After failing several attempts to boot up into the macbook operating system, is there any way to transfer data from a macbook that won't work to a macbook that does before reformatting, so that data held on the faulty macbook is not lost.

Thanks.

6 pin firewire cable in both firewire ports.

Turn the broken machine on while holding T, you should see a firewire symbol on the screen
Turn the other one on.

You should now be able to see the broken MacBook's Harddrive on the desktop.

BTW Whats the problem?

Hi Wally ,
I just spent 4 hours tring to get my MacBook to boot up without any sucess .
I've tried everything suggested by the apple forum and this one.
All I get is a get screen, the apple logo and the spinning gear.

I've repaired permissions via the boot up disk through the utilities feature which tells me all is well. But still won't boot up.

Many thanks!

Repairing permissions won't do much!

I'd be running AppleJack (http://applejack.sourceforge.net) to run all its maintenance scripts (which repairing permissions is included BUT permissions won't stop your computer from booting)
