As an owner of a 17" Powerbook I can say that they are too cumbersome for everyday travels and lugging around. If you are planning on having it as a desktop replacement that only gets moved occasionally, and you don't travel on public transport, then it will be fine.

Check out the Apple refurb page for bargains, as well as the following resellers which are having firesales at the moment.

Yo. Search. Refurbished. Shiny. Hell. Box.

Get the 2.5GHz 15" from the Apple Store. It's a bargain.

As an owner of a 17" MBP, i must say that it is absolutely fantastic and the screen real estate is perfect especially the new ones at 1920x1200. Honestly if your a large person (not fat) large you will have absolutely no problem with it. Oh, and if you need a good bag a Crumpler Skivvy (Large) is an absolutely amazing bag and is great!

The weight is very very light, and it is easily carry able, also the 17" model i find heats up alot less then the 15"

Overall it's up to you, also the 17" doesn't have that silly new trackpad, and stupid looking black frame (just my opinion!)

Also you may be able to pick up a early 2008 model for cheap if any stores still have them in stock. ! =D
