Download DMG.
Double click DMG.
Drag icon from DMG to Applications folder.
Eject DMG/delete DMG.
Launch from Applications folder or the Dock, if you have it there? Just click on the icon if it's in the Dock or double click if it's in Applications?

Are you stuck at launching? Sometimes when you download an app, it may request that you OK the app on the first launch, since it was downloaded. But it should be obvious what to do (accept/allow).

when you downloaded them, did you double click the file? Or are they still dmg files?

Just off the top of my head, Firefox and Messenger are two apps which have an actual installer which you have to use. When you open the DMG there should be a .pkg file which looks like a cardboard box(??). open that and go from there.

There are no installers with Firefox or MSN.

You drag them to Applications. It even has the Applications alias for you with arrows.

THanks for the replies.
Yes I have done all that - doubleclicked the dmg, dragged to applications folder when I click to launch them nothing happens.

Do you see the icons in the Dock?
Are they bouncing? Have they stopped bouncing? Is there a light (orb) underneath them?

Yes I have them on the dock - they bounce once when I click them but nothing launches.

This is my first Mac - I feel like an idiot! lol

Bounce once, then what?
Does it disappear after that [from Dock]?
Does it stay in the Dock and stop bouncing? Do you see anything?

16th November 2008, 09:25 PM
Yes it stays in the dock and stops bouncing. There is no orb under anything in the dock

No orb = not running.

If you are running Tiger or earlier, it will be a black triangle.

But since you say you're a new Mac user, I assume you have a new (current generation) Mac.

I am running OSx 10.3.9. I have black triangles under Safari and Finder - nothing else

Have you looked at the System Requirements?

The latest version of MSN Messenger (7.0.1) requires 10.4.9+ (Tiger). You are running 10.3.x which is Panther. The latest version of Firefox (3.0.4) also requires 10.4+ (Tiger).

That might explain why you can't run apps meant for 10.4 or higher, on 10.3.x.

Get Firefox here: Mozilla Firefox 2 (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html) and
MSN Messenger 6.0.3 here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/3/2/a32bb646-3ad3-42df-88c1-5495cd94933a/Messenger603.dmg

I would also recommend that you run Software Update (top left corner, Apple > Software Update...) to be up to date with everything.

Your iMac G5 can run 10.5.x Leopard (or 10.4.11 Tiger), as well.

You might also like to look into upgrading from 1GB of RAM as well [to 2GB max], in future.

Ok thanks - will look into upgrading it.
