Hi,
I realise that the problem below is more than likely going to result in the need for a new drive, but I thought Id ask if anyone has any other ideas before replacing it.

The computer is a 1st or 2nd Gen White 13 macbook with a CDRW / DVD combo drive running Leopard

What is wrong?
When I insert a CD into the drive it takes minutes to read the data / appear on the desktop
Makes a normal noise of a drive reading data, but it just takes forever.
Import of a audio CD to itunes was taking about 5 minutes a song
It does not seem to read all CDs, about half

Any Ideas other than the obvious (the drive is stuffed)?

Thanks,
Stephen

Are these retail discs you are talking about or ones you have burnt yourself in either this MacBook or something else ?
The reason I ask is that maybe you are using cheap and nasty blank discs.
Or , how much free space do you have on your hard drive.
I had a problem a while back where if I booted up from my second ( 60Gb ) hard drive a USB stick or disc would not appear on the desktop.
It turned out I only had about 5Gb free space left and OSX was struggling.
I had duplicated some large files accidentally .

Thanks for the info, The HD has about 50GB available and the CDs are all bought music CDs - so yeah, that shouldn't be a problem
