View Full Version : Stability of Office 2008

I have been using Office 2004 for a number of years and have never had any stability issues.

Since upgrading to an Intel iMac I have found office 2004 to be very unstable. For example an excel file would quit unexpectingly every 5 minutes or so. It is very frustrating.

I work in Finance and have very large excel files (20 meg to 80 meg in size) that perform various modelling.

I was wondering if Office 2004 working via rosetta was more unstable than Office 2004 working natively (via PPC) and if I upgraded to Office 2008 would I have such issues?

For now I have to use my dell laptop as I cannot rely on my new iMac :(

Do you have the latest updates for Office 2004 ?
Enough RAM ?
I have always found 2004 to be pretty stable but this is on older G4s.
Apart from installing it from my retail disc , I haven't done any updates to it.
Go to the MS site and see if there are any known patches or issues with running Office 2004 on Intel Macs.

Office 2008 for Intel Macs as 2004 Rosetta is reported to be flaky with quitting and restarting messages.

Office in rosetta would be your problem. 2008 would work much better on your intel machine

There are a slew of updates for Office 2004 - I'd guess about 8 or 9 - keep running Microsoft Autoupdate until it says there is nothing more! Office 2008 will be more stable and run a lot faster on an Intel Mac however - although I'm finding it pretty slow on a PowerPC Mac.

Byrd: It's way more than 8 or 9 now, and there's no combined updater, so you have to go through a bunch of them. The last update I did was to 11.4.0.

In that case, you need to should go to 11.5.2 (latest).

Thanks for your input. I upgraded via migration assistant. I noticed I was using version 11.5.1 and have upgraded to 11.5.2.

In regards to ram i have 4 gig so i don't think this is the issue.

I guess I have to upgrade to office 2008. As I work with large spreadsheets I don't think numbers08 will cut it as compared to excel.

i have had no problems with 2008, other than if you have spaces enabled office jumps around and looses the pointer..big pain when you are switching from browser to word when doing assignments the night they are due :D

I have continued to use Office 2004 Excel because of my need for VBA. (remember Office 2008 Mac = no VBA)
It runs OK on my mid 2006 Macbook with 2G RAM, but it did seem to have memory problems if the application has been open for a long time. I suspect this was something to do with the Rosetta emulation environment. I also run Entourage (connected to an Exchange mail server at work) and word occasionally. Under Office 2004 all these ran under Rosetta, so the extra memory demand is significant.
I have since upgraded and now run these other apps from Office 2008 which is universal. I don't have memory problems with Excel 2004 very often now at all.

As the others have said, there have been a stack of updates to Office 2004.
