Has anyone noticed when you change tabs often the iPhone will refresh the page automatically? Why is this?

AFAIK it isn't possible, but looking at the Android video today inspired me - can you open links in a new window? On Android you just hold and a menu comes up. This is so much more convenient than iPhone's browser <_<.

yes it does refresh always and its very annoying. I hate it as it needs to load the entire page again which counts towards your data.

Annoys the crap out of me too. Particularly because it can bite into your data (not such an issue for me as I don't get close to my allowance but still annoying). Methinks it might be designed that way on purpose.

I think it has something to do with the complexity of the pages loaded, especially how data heavy they are.

For example, if I load 3 "tabs" with these relatively lightweight pages:

Google (http://www.google.com/)
www.smh.com.au - News Index for 23/09/2008 (http://www.smh.com.au/text/) (text only version of the SMH)
BBC for the mobile web (http://bbcriver.com/) (text version of the BBC's most recent reports)

I can flick between each and they don't need to reload when I view them.

However, if I then open a new tab and load the full Sydney Morning Herald - Business News, World News & Breaking News in Australia (http://www.smh.com.au/) (a very data heavy page), then flick back to another tab, it has to be reloaded.

I'm guessing Safari has to jettison the memory it's used to cache page(s) to load a more data heavy one.

What happens when you close safari, use a few apps and then go back to safari? Do they reload then?

Just tried. I opened:

www.google.com
www.smh.com.au/text/ (again, TEXT ONLY version of the SMH, huge data difference!)
www.bbcriver.com

I let each page load, then started flicking between them.

Then I went to the iPhone home screen, loaded Notes, viewed one, quit it, launched Calculator, quit it, then returned to Safari.

All 3 pages still there and flickable. No reloading!

Cool. Thanks for the test. Must be data intensive pages that are reloading.
