when ppl say they have a 12" ibook there refering to the screen??

ayup. A 12" iBook has a 12.1" (diagonal) screen, but the body is over 14" diagonal.

a 14" iBook has a 14.1" (diagonal) screen, but the body is closer to 16" diagonal
