Hi everyone,

Due to a spectacularly incompetent service technician, we find ourselves in something of a pickle.

We had a weird ATA controller problem which meant the disk worked intermittently. We took it in....<skip to the end>...and four weeks later we have a crippled iBook with dodgy install of OS X and the old disk with everything on it.

I ordered a USB enclosure with the intention of firing up the iBook and using the drive as one would when setting up OS X from one machine to another. Then it hit me - I need a firewire one, don't I?

Any advice from the legions of clever clogs?

Unfortunately, yes to boot from an external hard disk on an iBook you'll need firewire (holding down 'F' at startup when you plug in the drive will allow you to select it). There is no functionality built in for USB booting.

If you can switch the drive, spending the extra $20 on dual USB/FW is great for switching the drive from various machines - Windows boxes included - otherwise a plain FW drive with an Oxford 911/922 chipset is the way to go.
