We can use Safari to access the portal and establish a VPN connection. This is successfull and I can see that teh connection has the correct ip address assigned. The problem arises when we try to use the configured proxy under system preferances >>Network. Even though the proxy is correctly configured safari does not seem to see it. If we use firefox that has it's own internal proxy configuration everything works fine.

*TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS TAKEN:

Verified connectivity with ping and ifconfig.

Used firefox to test

I have tried to research this on the internet as well

Applied hotfix 602-5

As far as I can determine this seems to be something to do with Safari/Mac os X and I am hoping you've come across this before and may be able to help.
