I went to the new streetwise super store yesterday(drool), as I am looking at Powwrbooks 12 or 15. In the course of the conversation I now understand that the 12" comes with 2 RAM slots one of which you cant touch. I intend going to 1.2 gig of RAM

Any comments on the affect on running Photoshop and Maya(beginner to intermediate)

Also how much better is the graphics card in the 15 over the 12

The 12" Powerbook only has 1 dimm slot. The other memory is onboard the logic board. So for sometime now 256mb has been on the logic board. So when you buy the unit at defaults it comes with 1 x 256mb chip populated into the only dimm slot/socket. Thus giving you 512mb total.

Powerbook 15" has no onboard memory, it has 2 dimm slots/sockets.

As for the GPU, the fact both models use 2 different GPU's is enough difference for a start, not to mention the fact the 15" and 17" can then also have more video memory as an option at purchase time.

If you need the higher end GPU with more memory, by all means get the option on the 15" model.

I own an old 1.25Ghz 15" with superdrive (with standard 64mb of video and it performs quite well). Although I don't do alot with the machine to really complain or gauge. My wife is about to get a 12" so I will see how hers performs compared to my older unit.

Cool,

By my calcs a PB 15" with a Gig of Ram is only $470 more than a12" with a Gig of RAM

So for $470 you get a bigger screen 20Gig bigger HD and a better GPU so to me the choice is obvious :D

12" is still powerfull, as the "Powerbook" name suggests, but it simply does not have the physical room to be as powerful or expandable as the 15" or 17" powerbooks. The fact that it is so small is a miracle, dont get me wrong; its just that the 15 and 17 will always out pace the 12" with each revision, simply because there is more room internally.

The only reason to choose the 12" is the added portability, but I think the 15" is perfect, as it is still portable (I carry it to Uni every day of the week, and I am yet to have my vertebrae compress... :P) and is capable of being the most powerful Apple laptop available. There is nothing the 17" can do that the 15" cannot. Sadly, this isn't true of the 12", which will always take a performance hit compared to a 15 or 17"er.

Well of course you'll pick the 15"; that way you can use the 30" Studio Display.

And who wouldn't want that much more screenspace?

:P
