press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/may/04wwdc.html

Apple® today announced that Steve Jobs will kick off its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote on Monday, June 28, 2004, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at San Francisco’s Moscone West. This year's keynote will include a preview of “Tiger,” the next major release of Mac® OS X.

fantastic! - or not so fantastic considering that everyone already payed for a .1 update to OS X recently.

Anyone got any info in tiger? Each release of OSX seems to leave out yet another piece of legacy hardware.

Slightly off topic, I'm surprised Apple hasn't put more work into optimising GCC by now. PPC code out of GCC is still woefully slow, and there's much work IBM/Apple could be doing at improving this to further push the POWER platform as a viable alternative.

Here's hoping 10.4 takes yet another boost in speed like 10.3 did!

IBM has their own PPC compiler that apparently shits all over GCC in terms of speed.

Of course, this is expensive software, hardly something Apple would ship with the OS. I would think they'd use it to compile the OS and binaries though, rather than GCC.

Hmm, just don't tell me Tiger is 64-bit only (or G5 only).

Off topic,
Don't panthers run faster than tigers? Naming issue, I am talking about the big cats animal category.

while i don't like to pay $229, (hopefully $199 this year) i don't really mind too much. pc users complain about it but really if you see how much mac os x has changed its well worth it

cheetah - completely new from os 9
puma - free
jag(wire) - qt, ichat, rendezvous, new mail, ical, isync
panther - expose, fast user switching, ichat av, new mail, footbook, new finder

how has windows xp changed in the last 3 years???

Panther is only $120 for students :P
Windows XP for students is about $150 if I'm not mistaken.
And I don't mind purchasing a product I like to use as opposed to being forced to use it...

Windows XP for students is “Upgrade” version, right? You need a copy of previous Windows license.

Yeah, that's correct, which makes it even more of a jerk-around :P

10.4 looks like it might be another desktop revolution

10.4 allows for the placement of windows on a completely 3d plane. Imagine your desktop as sort of a 3d orb that you can place windows on, and rotated in 3d space.

http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-59443

Apparently they're going to introduce a new mouse with a track ball where the scroll wheel usually is, and using this track ball, you can rotate the 'sphere' of windows on your desktop to bring windows in and out of focus. Windows also have depth and dimensionality, meaning, windows can be linked together, and rotated like a cube.

Could this be related to the patent (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-adv.html&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01&S1=20030076303.PGNR.&OS=dn/20030076303&RS=DN/20030076303) registered for the "The peripheral input device includes a housing and an optical touch pad"

And those sort of things are very achievable with the OpenGL base that the entire UI uses.
Let the speculation continue :D

damnit i knew as soon as i bought 10.3 it would become obsolete! damn!

Still, i think that will be a great develpment, as i find 10.3 still a little less than perfect, whats with the lame name man! 'OS X Tigger' next is os X.9 Pooh then Piglet, hmm

Tiger is ok though, but it shall be apples last (big) cat named os next, they should switch to less dominating names, like OS X.6 'tabby'" or ' Moggy', 'Domestic short-hair' te he :D

Why on earth would you buy M$ Windows? for those that did.

i have a copy of win 95... from my first pc... never bought any copy of windows since then.

heres just some of the things i would want in tiger;

new finder - with meta data support/preview built in
better help - help on the mac sucks. windows xps help is sooo much better
new safari - better and faster
system maintenance - system restore from xp, get permissions fixed so a normal user could use it
footbook - make it faster
more assistants - a new mac user feels helpless

something cool like expose and things to surprise Microsoft and pc users

I think I'd like a new and improved dock. The one now is good, but all apps are just lumped together. It would be better if there was a way you could categorise stuff. Your creative apps over here, your business apps here etc. I know you can put folders down there to click and hold for a list of what's inside - but that is way too unresponsive.

Also, I've mentioned this in another post - joystick support. A great way for Mac OS X to get a greater slice of the OS pie is by getting geeks interested. How do geeks usually rate a computer? By how good the gaming is on it. Joystick support on OS X is limited to people having to buy a utility called USB overdrive that maps out keys from the keyboard to the gamepad.

It's good to see there is a stealth mode for the firewall. I hope that screenie is at least real.

how about some kind of tabbed dock..? colour coded as well..? i'm really fussy about overcrowding the dock, so it would be useful to have something a bit more accommodating : )

not long to go!!
