Just an idea I had today as I was walking in the city (Melbourne) of an application that can direct us to the nearest wifi hotspot? For Optus, Telstra or Vodafone?

Rather than us going to the optus wifi hotspot map, or the azure (or whatever it is :p) hot spot map, you open an application (probably able to use google maps or make an extension onto google maps) where pins drop and set out the free wifi spots. You click on the nearest one to your location and ask for directions?

Simple? Would be great.

If there already is a solution let me know! :D

It would be great if you could view all, everywhere, all over the world and people can just tag them as public, private or network hotspots.

That way you can be overseas and need a hotspot, look at your map and find one.

Yea exactly, that would be awesome!! Shouldn't be too hard to develop?

I'm currently converting my APlogger (http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au/~chris/iphone/APlogger/) into APmapper (http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au/~chris/iphone/APmapper/), and it will be freely available soon after the 2.0 jailbreak

In the meantime, perhaps you'll like JWire (http://iphone.jiwire.com/).

Making your own map? Jailbreak?

This app is far too geeky for me. And I'm pretty much a geek.

jiwire seems great. Is there one specific to free Optus hot spots or are these wifi hot spots on jiwire for all carriers?

Why would you require a user to create their own maps? This seems a ridiculous idea to me...Ridiculous; thanks for the feedback. Because there are there are many, most, places for which Google Maps or OpenStreetMaps do not provide coverage. The inside of, ohh, all buildings come to mind. Try to find The University of Western Australia on Google Maps, for example.....

How about using Google Maps as a fallback at least?

I'm sure all two users creating maps for your app will love it though :/

My application is not a navigation tool, but a tool assisting my research into wireless networking. Many, known satisfied users of the non-mapping version! If you're not happy, please don't buy my application.

I've just emailed myself the telstra XL file. it won't open, so i copied the VIC tab into a new file and emailed myself that, works fine now.

nice long list for it i'm stuck, i can just look one up.

i geocoded the vic ones a while back for when we were chatting about plans, next step is to import those into my google map as a map to look at...

How is this going?Well, thanks. I've been adding the ability to download static maps from Google, or elsewhere, and display them as a tiled view in APMapper, and that's slowed progress a little.
Hopefully just one more week.
