I was watching that as well, and saw an Old School 17" Mac Cinema Display on one of the desks in the background

Officeworks sell iPods

Megamart, full of cheap-as homewares, had a grand opening down the road. Then, they had to have another grand re-opening again a few weeks later, because nobody cared.

Domayne, chockers full of expensive overpriced lifestyle gear, just up the road, did the same.
Just in case people didn't realise...
Officeworks is owned by Coles Myer as is Target, Kmart and Harris Technology which is why a lot of OW stores now have mini HT stores in them

Domayne is owned by Harvey Norman

Harvey Norman Holdings owns the Domayne, Harvey Norman, Joyce Mayne, Pertama, and Rebel Sport banners.

The Harvey family owns around 50% (just under I think) of Harvey Norman Holdings.

Harvey Norman Holdings leases property to franchisees and provides them with administrative and advertising services in return for a percentage of sales.

French & Saunders
Easter Special (2002)

"Back by popular demand, award-winning funnygirls, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, in a wickedly sharp sketch show, and a magical reinterpretation of cinema blockbuster Lord Of The Rings."

In one scene they are using a 15" Titanium Powerbook (with the Apple covered over - badly).

The dialogue at this point goes something like:

"Spinning icon! Spinning icon! Shut it down! Unplug it! Close the lid!"

New show in the states, Boston Legal, has a few 17'' powerbooks..... of course the Apple logo is covered over.
Also the music video for Alien by Bexta also has scenes of her in a club playing with a tibook, apple logo is in full view there.

:) Watching an early morning InfoMercial (http://www.eyeq.tv/).

about adding to ones IQ (eyeQ) by utilizing a computer program designed to exercise your eyes ---> <--- and thereby your brain.

Many of the people in the 1/2 hour advert (including the host) were using various MacComputers, including the coloured G3 iMacs and the Swivel Screen G4, and the Ultra thin TiBook. Even the Old "ClamShell" B)

I must say, they do look fantastic on TV! :o Enough to make me at least curious about what the heck they are, and why do they look so intriguingly DIFFERENT.

Bing Lee Apple store within a store

The Bing Lee store in the newly opened Rhodes Shopping Centre in Sydney (the one with the massive new IKEA store) has a very good looking Apple store within a store just, err, inside the store :-)

They are using the new Apple store look, seem to have plenty of gear on display and the staff (from my brief chat) seem to know the basics, at least. It seems this is a first for Bing Lee, hopefully it will expose even more people to The Macintosh Way.

There was plenty of stock on Sunday afternoon, I counted at least a dozen PowerMac G5 boxes stacked at the corners for starters. The iPod was (naturally) everywhere - they had two units available for listening and plenty of boxes on shelves - although most of those were display boxes ... I did see a full range of minis under the glass at a counter behind the store as well.

I wonder if Bing Lee are going to be putting more of these store-within-a-stores in? If the staff can do a good job, this could be a big move forwards for Apple retail. This one looks just like another I have seen recently - David Jones Chatswood store. Perhaps this is how Australia will be getting the Apple Store?

Not only is there no mention of the Apple store, the website has apparently not been updated since the Apple store was opened. I thought I'd check out and see how centre management would promote Apple. The site 'Search' function returned 0 results <_<

"Phwoah, had a late one last night - but because I choose to keep my 9AM appointment, I choose Panadol Rapid." - he's got a TiBook on the coffee table as he wakes up.

McDonalds Ad:
"Get me one of those crispy chicken burgers!" - Big Boss has a G4-era cinema display with G5-era white keyboard and mouse, with a conveniently placed disc over the apple logo.

Here's a significant non-Mac spotting event:

In Ocean's Twelve, the NightFox leaves them a message on a prominently logoed DELL DJ (in what would appear to be the perfect placement for an iPod)! This, despite the gang using some sort of Apples with Cinema displays for their heists.

Either Dell paid them some premium mulah and they just like using Apples, or it is a devious joke on Dell since the NightFox eventually gets bettered by the Mac-friendly Ocean's Twelve in the end.

All the vampires use Macs,

and Whistlers Daughter stuffs an iPod in her ears several times... along with a fat check from apple methinks :P Uses a powerbook to arrange her Vampire hunting playlist though.

Movie screams Apple advertising.

Just saw two movies, Meet the Fockers and Garden State which, both amazingly have abundant apple hardware.

In Meet the Fockers, there is a scene with a the little boy. Next to the crib there is an iMac G4 with an iSight. And in the opening sequence of the movie, Ben Stiller prints of his plane tickets wirelessly. You even get to see the whole genie maximising effect.

In Garden State, the dad uses one of the old cinema displays. The apple logo makes a very nice guess appearance.

I followed the time bandit link, checked out the page which raves about the movie of the same name and finishes with "sounds from time bandits" which actually is a list of links to sound bites from Aliens (why???). The relationship between these two movies is totally lost on me. I can see that I am missing something somewhere :(

Also (may have been mentioned before) The first movie I watch on TV in more than a year (last night, it was rubbish); The Firm, starring Nicoles ex who conspicuously uses some kind of desktop mac. Identified by the keyboard and ADB plug and then the OS 9 dialogue box when printing.

and the whole thing was a massive apple ad.
she loads up iTunes on her powerbook and plugs in her iPod
and sets up a playlist.

and the actor literally goes "she likes to set playlists and listen to mp3's while
she fights"

at the end of the movie i turned to my friends and said
"Hey guys lets go get iPods"

I saw meet the fockers today with the GF
it had a G4 Mac and one of those massive LCD Mac Monitors
with an iSight attached to the top of it

Mwaha!

En Route back from Vanuatu today, the cabin crew do their usual speel: "please turn off all electronic devices, including Mobile phones, electronic games and laptops, as these items may interfere with the aircraft navigation systems..."

HOWEVER: on my flight from Brisbane to Sydney (and partly due to the proliferation of iPods on the flight {at least 4, which is pretty good seeing as the 737-400 holds about 160 people [wingspan of 29.6 metres]} and the fact that the iPods were visible due to white earbuds)

~love the brackets~

Anyways, the announcement went "Please turn off all electronic devices, especially iPods electronic games or laptops..."

Hehehehe. Again I say it: The iPod shall inherit the Earth.

And yeah, kim, she is HOT and has her own special iPod- as far as I know a lot of music and film stars have had personalised iPods made just for them by Apple, presumably in the hope that they might be featured in movies/filmclips etc. It certainly paid off with Gwen. :D

Yeah I noticed all the Powerbooks in the "office" as well!!!
But you forgot Sydney's G4 iMac in her bedroom - but the music was coming from the iPod next to it and portable Lansing speakers!

Maybe someone can help me here. Has anyone been watching the Cricket, ODI games especially? There's a Mc Donalds ad played regularly where the Work Experience kid ends up getting stuck with the lunch order for the whole office. At the start in the boss's office, there is what appears to be a 23 inch Cinema Display on the desk. I say 'appears' because the Apple logo on the back is missing. In it's place is a plain circle. What's the deal? Is it a Cinema Display or what? Now, apart from the obvious sub-text of this ad, that is, that work-place bullying is quite ok, is there some McDonalds/evil empire/right wing neo-conservative anti mac agenda also at work here too.....? Or am I just being paranoid?

Ozi
23rd January 2005, 10:49 PM
yeah it is an apple cinema display (ACD) with apple wireless mouse and keyboard. Normally in ads which use apples, they hide the logo or remove it in post-production because Apple doesn't pay them anything to have it there. I know that in an ad for the "Mazda 2" with the foam being whipped off the cappuchinos there is an iBook, but they carefully placed a sugar container in the way of the Apple logo.

So no anti-mac conspiracy: they are just chosing not to give Apple free publicity by showing the apple symbol.

I love seeing print ads that have a picture of a PC that seems to sport an apple desktop or browser. The classic I saw the other day was a magazine for photo re-touching that had a Dell laptop on the cover . The Dell was running the Apple version of Photoshop but they had Photoshopped out the blue Apple.

This isn't "spotting" in the purest sense, but its always good to read the Green Guide in The Age (easiest for Melburnians, but possible in other states) as they have an interview every week with a different person about how they use technology, and their 5 favourite gadgets. About 80% of the time, one of those gadgets is made by Apple (normally an iPod and/or a laptop. Normally they are "creative" people - designers, photographers, comedians (in this weeks installment) and it is just remarkable how many of them use Apples.

Sydney Domestic Airport runs a little 5min video on their passenger screening and security procedures on the flight information boards - it repeats all day so I must have watched it about 600 times while working there last week. It basically runs through all the things you can expect to have done to you in the name of security while you're there, and includes a section on what's safe to go through the x-ray machines, which includes laptops - their example is a bloke pulling his 15" Powerbook out of his bag and placing it in a little tray.

The reason they put a cover of some sort over the Apple logo is as to either not pay a royalty, or get sued.

If you do see the logo, then there was either an agreement made to use it, for a fee. Or there is a lawsuit coming the film company's way. :)

Ok, I've seen Powerbooks on two programs on the Seven Network, Las Vegas and Boston Legal.

Some funny observations about both of them, in Las Vegas, the girl is sitting at her desk with the Powerbook (appearing to be using it), but from the rear view the Apple logo isn't even on!!

The lawyers in Boston Legal appear to be using Powerbooks also, but the Apple logos are covered over with darker grey rectangles, perhaps to prevent advertising the brand.

The Island, the movie has cinema displays all over the place.

Entourage, the new HBO tv show is like an Apple ad. All the main characters use Macs, you have the main characters video chatting on iChat, you have them talking about iPods and using them in a few scenes. You have talk about G5's and being whisper quiet. You have characters going into apple stores, to get refunds and using the photography classes.

In addition to the Mac advertising, it is also a great show to boot.
