Number of iTunes tracks: 0 ... mainly because I don't have iTunes installed. I loathe it.

My music library, however -- all nicely sorted and tagged, with over 95% of the material sourced from my own CDs and vinyls -- exceeds 44,000 tracks and just recently overflowed a 500 GB drive. I have another 200 GB worth of mixes. I've been building it up for over a decade, in case you were curious :)

May not count in the count:

I also have 1,180 music videos that are not in my iTunes Library - not sure I want to ad them.

I also have 436 movies that have been recorded, converted and front ended with iDVD that live on another HD. (that's another 468.08 GB)

And over 2000 demo CDs from my niece in the States - she used to work for Columbia Records and was the person who made the final contract decisions for groups to be contracted. (I haven't ripped them yet - nor taken most out of the boxes.

No movies kept in it - no podcasts either. Deleted all of that a while ago.
Clarification - yes I can put my hands on the cd's but I'd love to get rid of them all. I know a lot of people like them for different reasons but I'm sick of the clutter and I just like listening to the music even if it is a lossy format from original.

Edit: I'm curious to know who is properly backing up their libraries - so many of you have substantial time and money invested in your libraries!!

I find that rating them, and genre don't do anythign for me. Album art, i add as i go. But rating and such, i just hide them anyway. I am the only one who looks at my albums, i know which ones i like. I think its pointless.

And I still haven't finished ripping all the CD singles I own :p

Just wondering. I did finish my modest collection. But it totals more than 76GB but is *way less* than 10K+ songs. Around 3,000 and about 12 days - HDD off line ATM.

I ripped at AIFF full format so each song takes up at least 30MB of space, sometimes 50MB.

Looks like you rip at a lesser format?

My thinking was this: a straight copy onto the HDD gets me the full format AIFF and I think I preserve the quality 100%. My ears aren't sensitive audiophile ears but I figure that full format future proofs my collection. MP3 for example might be considered ultra lo-fi years from now and I'd hate having to rip the lot again. AIFF plays well over 80211.n household network so I've no complaints about file size/lag.

Disadvantage is that I have to annotate each one by hand. Lots of MP3 utilities do this automatically using online databases.

I have an 500 GB external HDD that is specifically allocated to media storage - last time I checked my iTunes folder was around 110 gbs. And I still have tons of albums that I haven't ripped yet!

The bigger it gets the more effort that goes into managing it!

iTunes on iMac: 2868 songs, 8.7 days, 78.45GB (all ripped in Apple lossless for my 'critical listening' setup. These tracks consist of only my physical CDs that have been ripped)

And...

iTunes on MacBook: 5064 songs, 16.7 days, 22.74GB (mostly ripped in 128kbps AAC and some MP3 of varying bitrate, used for portable listening on my MacBook and syncing to iPhone and bedside iPod, contains all tracks ripped from CD as well as music aquired from elsewhere like iTunes store, last.fm etc)

I must add- iPods are used most of the time with my library when it comes time to add songs to MP3 players-but often also to Sansa,Creative,,Sony and Samsung UMS players.

All very good saying you have multi-thousands of tunes, but do you know them all?

8765 tunes, of which about 300 are duplicates of my original compositions in low res, high res and AIFF, the rest I know every single track that's in there. Not one tune that iTunes DJ pops is a case of, "Where did that come from?!" I know where the tune came from, when I got it or ripped it, who the artist is and the song name.

Ask me a music general knowledge question, and I'm flummoxed. Ask me, "have you got {song} by {artist}?" and I can answer with 99% accuracy. I'm amazed by the human brain, any human brain! We all have these "rainman" traits.

Old thread but hey, mine is only 4gb but on my larger library it is hitting 20gb+.

I'd be interested to know your play count on your most played song. My most played song is 95 plays and I have had the song since christmas day '09 but I won't say what it is.

My iTunes collection sits at 42.51GB

The dilemma I have is that my primary machine is a Mac Book Air with 128 GB SSD.

At home I have a mac mini plugged into my TV with 2 x 1TB HDD with my other media and back ups on it...
but find all too often my MBA is too full, and I have less than 10% of that HDD free.

I sync 2 x iPhones and my iPad to my MBA, and I travel a lot (thus I bought the MBA over my last 15" MBP).

What should I do?
Move it all to the mac mini HDD?
Move it all to the external HDD?
Buy a MBP (instead of my MBA -despite the extra weight)?
Buy a iMac?

I had the same problem. I moved everything to the Mac Mini HDD (which I maxed out at 320GB) and have 2 x 1TB SATA WD MyBook for Mac external HDD for the entire backup AND an extra 1TB external HDD for my movies.

I rarely use my MBA anymore. I don't sync my iPhone to it either. But it does have most of my music and iPhotos (just in case something happened to both my SATA drives AND Mac Mini). Currently, on the 80GB HDD, it only has 20GB left.
