With tiger getting closer im interested to hear what widgets you may have created or may be working on or widgets that you would like someone to make.

Im putting the finishing touches on a tv guide widget and then im moving on to an xml/rss parser

im open to ideas for other widgets so if you have an idea let me know

how about a flush widget that flushes cache and log files?

ie it could be a little widget with a few buttons, one button for internet cache files, another for system log files, another for crashlog files. etc etc. that way people that can't be bothered or just don't know how can actually delete these things. it would be a widget that you wouldn't always have visible but it would be handy nevertheless.

A general non-validating xml parser would be cool

You could put all sorts of data through that - even raw HTML.

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 08:48 AM
yup thats could be done.not something i know how to do right now though.
i would think a perl script or something like that could be used to do th deleting

im thinking of doing a specialised australian weather widget and im also investigating doing an alarm clock widget

my tv guide widget is essentially an xml parser that does extra things.
it downloads the xml feeds then split them up and gets what it needs.

aslong as the feed uses a standard structure i can easily make a parser for rss feeds.

if you want to dump html then the widget would need to designed for each source.

im going to look at a html parser to get usage stats for bigpond and a few other isp's but each one will be designed for 1 html feed as the structure is always different

another cool one could be spectre's webcam widget ;)

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 08:54 AM
again thats possible.
i belive you can view that through a normal webpage so it would just be a matter of linking the video source into a widget wich would be a simple
5 minute job

Are you going to post them somewhere for people to download them?
The tv guide and the cache and log flusher ideas sound like winners to me.

Will the tv guide widget be similar to the tv guide system used on Foxtel digital? I hope so.

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 08:59 AM
i wont release any widgets until tiger ships.
the tvguide widget is working nicely but it has problems under later builds so ill have to do some debugging when tiger comes out.

once they are complete ill post links here for sure.

its based on the konfabulator widget "Whats on" which is made by another australian developer.

i dont know how the guide on foxtel works but im very hapy with mine.
its very user friendly and very simple.
it supports all channels including austar/foxtel/optus along with digital and high def channels.

it shows the current show along with the next 2 shows
its fairly limited on what it can show.
it uses the only free tv guide feed i know of in australia but it lacks data.
it doesnt show descriptions of shows or anything like that.
at the moment for each channel it shows the channel logo and then the current and next 2 shows.for each show the start time and name are shown.i havent seen the need for any other data and there is no way to add any more at this stage anyway

you can see the konfabulator version here

since someone liked my idea for the flusher widget (has to have a toilet icon) i will suggest a less serious one. make a widget that does my job so that i can simply keep my computer at work and head down to the beach on sunny days.

queraxus

islayer, that's a simplified version of the foxtel system.

Good enough for me.

I've been working on a couple - one is a small light that will flash red if a security update is available that you haven't installed yet. The other is a one that I worked on with a friend that is a Japanese Kana flash card widget (nicer than the one that is already online, of course :-P).

I might try and make an Internode usage widget sometime soonish. That'd be handy I reckon (for me anyway).

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 10:00 AM
that security update one is a good idea.
im up for an internode widget but it wouldnt happen till i move to them sometime this month.

as for my tv guide widget ive had a suggestion from someone at whirlpool to add support for the channel packages of foxtel/austar which i will impliment today

ill get some screenshots up tonight

Would it be difficult to creat an Aussie ISP "mega widget" which you can choose your ISP from a list? It'd save many the trouble of looking around for their particular ISP's version.

Other widgets i'd like to see: Games! Stupid little games that i can dashboard in and out of.
A web browser - so we can all check out appletalk from work ;)
A terminal window

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 10:15 AM
there is a web broswer flaoting around somewhere.ill dig up the link tonight.

there was a bash terminal window that was released just after the wwdc build was given to devs.

there is a few games such as solitare, minesweeper and a few others around also

an ISP "mega Widget" wouldnt be easy but it can be done.
its no harder then making one for each isp.
but im limited by the fact im only with bigpond for now then ill be with internode so i can only do widgets for them at this stage.i might be able to pull off optus dialup(broadband aswell as its probably the same)

im up for it but it really depends how friendly the isps stats page is and how easily i can get the widget to login to the isps page

I was hoping someone might have made an AppleTalk widget for Konfab for the "New Posts" on the Forum. That'd just be a simple RSS reader ...

If someone isn't working on this, I'll have a shot at it (for Tiger).

Disko
4th April 2005, 10:27 AM
Well, it's not as simple as being an RSS reader - but if anyone would like to take a shot at it email me, and we can work something out.

(it has to be a good)

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 10:27 AM
i am doing one for dashboard that shows the recent posts from here and another to download the rss feed for the news items

Oh and Disko no ive had a few minutes to think about it i can do a web broswer widget.its actually very simple now i think about it.
i thought it would need a plugin but some good use of iframes will do it perfectly.

an update of widgets i will be doing.

Tv guide widget --75-80% complete
just have to impliment preference saving and fincish channel options

appletalk recent posts and news reader-0% complete
will be doing both tonight and expect to finish both tonight

bigpond/internode usage getter-0% complete
will start the bigpond widget later this week and internode in a few weeks time

web browser-0% complete
will potentially start and finish today.its a very simple widget from what ive worked out so far

Disko
4th April 2005, 10:53 AM
you can actually include OSX's webkit into widgets - so that makes the browser even easier.

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 10:57 AM
i dont even need to do that (well essentially all widgets include webkit because widgets are just webpages which are drawn with webkit).
my thinking is i have a address bar which has a text input box like a normal broswer.then i have a "go" button and when its click it will load the address in the address bar into an iframe inside the widget.
its very simple and will take less then an hour to make.

think ill do it in my lunch break :)

iSlayer

I have a question for everyone.
with my tv guide widget it will allow you to have as many channels as you want so now i need a way to navgate between them if you list takes more height then you screen.

option 1.have next/previous buttons to navigate between pages which show a user defined number of channels.

option 2.put everything in an iframe which would allow for vertical scrolling.it would not effect anything else

they are the best 2 options i have so far so please let me know which one you would prefer from an end user point of view

sikosis
4th April 2005, 04:26 PM
@islayer ... just one feature I'd want ... I'm in QLD but I have Foxtel Analog Satellite, which means when Daylight Savings happens, I get all the shows on NSW time.

will it be capable of supporting that ? I use Samurize on my PC and I had to contact the dude, who made the TV Guide for Australia. He ended up putting in an offset value, but that means I have to manually update it for DLS.

Just curious ?

for your question ...

option 1 ... most likely ... with the ability to set the number of channels shown per page and also their order.

iSlayer
4th April 2005, 04:53 PM

Before you do anymore coding islayer..... :)

Are you thinking ahead to a eyetv module for your widget creation
It'd be cool to have a tvguide widget that could queue a recording once the show is clicked.

it was something i was thinking of but a have neither a pre-relese of Tiger or a eyetv ( it's on the list, want to get a isight first ).

iSlayer

i need to wait for the release of tiger to do it.
i have to learn how to escape characters for it to work.

update time.
browser widget is dead.it works fine but has flaws.it cant detect if i site cant be found so it doesnt change state to reflect this.it also dies with yahoo.com since of the dodgy way there links work.

tv guide widget is looking very nice thanks to a great skin design by disko.

appletalk rss feed widget is going very nicely and more or less just needs a skin now.

im working on a comic strip widget with another deisgner which looks very promising.

im still looking for more ideas so let me know if you have one

another update...
i have now made a fortune cookie/joke/fact widget.
its very similar to the fortune program in linux and unix.it has around 45000 cookies in it at this stage.

im currently working on a new widget which is used to track packages.it currently works with Australian Air Express and Star Track Express but i will definatly add more support to that.i got the idea from another widget that tracked fedex packages and thought it was a cool idea

Thats all for now....

well i wouldnt mind one of you making a skin for my fortune widget.
currently i have a simple brushed metal box but its boring an plain.

i dont need anything to fancy.it has to resize well in both width and height as some forunes are as small as 150px wide and i have set a max of 500px.height ranges from from 3 lines of text upto 20 lines of text

there will be Header that says "Today's Fortune" and then the fortune will be under it.
send me a pm if you need more details

Hey islayer,

Any chance you have checked out ITVeye? This uses the yahoo tv guide, which has an Australian equivalent <http://au.tv.yahoo.com/>. The guy who wrote ITVeye says it is just a browser, which I guess would have the same applecripts you have to make EyeTV record. Is this similar to what you are doing with the tv guide widget?

iSlayer
12th April 2005, 08:17 AM
no i havent.
i have an applescript already to add programs to the eyetv scheduling app but i have to intergrate it into the widget which is not easy to do.
there are ways to do it from safari but its alot easier there because you have to be on the actual page for that show where as mine will show multiple shows so i havwe to make it so you can select which ones to add

The EyeTV project might be easier with a full AppleScript Studio app. I'm figuring showing a full guide for the next 6 hours might take up a fair amount of screen real estate, which would kind of miss the point of a widget :-) Is it easy with Applescript to rip tv data?

iSlayer
12th April 2005, 10:34 AM
not really.
i dont want to build an applescript app i want it to be part of the widget.

lavo
12th April 2005, 10:46 AM
But how big would the widget have to be? At the moment, you widget shows the next three shows. What if I wanted to see what was coming up in three days time, to set a recording? Would it be possible to move that far forward, or will it only show the next three shows?

Not being picky at all (I think your widgets are fantastic!) but I have been searching for the Holy Grail of Eyetv programming in Australia for years!

iSlayer
12th April 2005, 10:52 AM
it is hardcoded to show the next three shows.
i have no plans to change that

marc
12th April 2005, 10:55 AM
I don't mind that it only shows what's up in the next hour or so. Maybe a good middle ground solution would be to have the channel logos as links to the station's full program.

iSlayer
12th April 2005, 11:06 AM
i can do that i guess.
its an xml feed so it should work nicely in safari 2.0 in tiger
the widget is designed to only show 3 shows and i dont want to change that.its not meant to be a full blown tv guide.
its impossible to add moreinfo without it taking a huge amound off space.
as it is now if you have more then 10-15 channels it will take the hight of your screen

Now what i am willing to do is make a second widget that shows every show for a specified channel for the current day.
it would again take alot of height so i would think splitting into 6 hour groups and having a way to navigate between them would be the best way.(it would also be able to show the first 6 hours of the next day)
the widget would have as many channels as you want but only ever show 1 at a time.i would have navigation to move between channels.

i have no problem making that widget if you guys want it

lavo
12th April 2005, 11:21 AM
No dramas! The original widget idea is fine. I was looking for a possible EPG for EyeTV, thinking this widget may be a possibility. I have emailled the author of ITVeye a few weeks back, but received no response :-(

Anybody had a look at yahoo's tv guide? I'm no wizz on "web stuff", but it seems that the guide just changes with a few numbers in the URL (which follow a simple pattern). Is this how people get the guide into their own programs, but adjusting the numbers in the URL?

marc
13th April 2005, 08:56 AM
I can't wait to actually be able to use widgets.

One of the great things about them is that it'll clean up your dock... you'll only need the larger apps in there. Everything else can be a widget.

Another widget idea (but might be hard to implement): Printer queue. It's another one of those things you just want to look at for a second, but it currently still takes up dock space.

iSlayer
13th April 2005, 08:59 AM
sorry marc i dont think i can do it.
it would require a cocoa plugin and i dont know cocoa

marc
13th April 2005, 09:00 AM
Yet another widget idea: "Extra dock" -- A launcher for apps and utils that don't get used too much. You'd lose some of the functionality of the dock (no drag and drop), but it'd be slightly handier that going to the finder and hitting Apple-shift-A or Apple-shift-U then finding what you're after.

iSlayer
13th April 2005, 09:01 AM
hmm ill have to think about it....

marc
13th April 2005, 09:04 AM
Lol.

I'm not suggesting you code every idea!

They're just concepts, and hopefully will spark more ideas from others.
We can then cherry-pick the best ones.

And yeah, I'm sure that printer idea would be very hard to implement.

iSlayer
13th April 2005, 09:07 AM
ideas are good.
most widgets can be created in under a day if they dont need plugins.
keep the ideas coming

i could probably do that dock one but ill have to consider a few things regarding getting icons out of app bundles and if i can make it work with apps outside the applications folder.

marc
13th April 2005, 09:09 AM
Maybe it could read aliases from a folder. Similar to the way Apple Menu Items used to be.

iSlayer
13th April 2005, 11:36 AM
possibly.
the widget would be limited.
you would have to type in the exact name of the app and it would need to be in the applications folder.
it can work but im not sure how well so at this stage i dont think ill make it

marc
16th April 2005, 11:01 PM

quick update...
tv guide widget has been delayed for a few reasons but it will be much better then i originally planned.it now downloads several days worth of feeds and it caches them so you can run the widget while your offline.the files are stored in your user library and are automatically updated twice a week and the old files are moved to the trash.

eyetv intergration is done.it add the start time and length aswell as the title.i cant add descriptions as the feed i use desnt provide them for most shows.

i added the preference system last week so you can now add/remove channels.

i still have alot to do and i have to manually maintain feeds for adelaide/darwin/canberra which is taking some time at the moment.

i may release a beta to selected people as soon as this weekend and the first public release will hopefully be early next week

Here's a rough of "Fuel Gauge", a widget that shows free space available on the drive.
http://www.obliquemusic.co.uk/forumimages/fuel_gauge.jpg
The bottom version is the real size, the top one is just there so you can see it in more detail.
Things we have planned The dashboard might turn dark at night, and the lights would shine more (as if you were looking at a car dash at night)
Several drives would be supported. They'd just stack on top of each other.
The "!" light indicates the volume is 90% full or more. We may add an alarm. The "HD" and other icons indicate the volume type (HD or CD/DVD). The lock icon shows if the volume is locked

Any suggestions are welcome.

Yes, the gauge is modeled on the MINI Cooper :D

What about showing CPU useage? I guess as like a bar graph...

One thing which would be really interesting if it could be done, would be to show RAM useage!! Then we can tell if we really do need that extra Gig of RAM!! :)

Edit - hmm, I see ipod_man has already suggested such a thing - I'll second that!

marc

Rather than have an all-in-one, it might be nice to have a separate widget for ram/cpu usage... unless it was just another module like the HD thing that sat on top. Hmmm... it's probably more up to islayer, as he'd be the one who has to code it.

Fixed... and thanks.

Can anyone think of a good thing to add to the status circles?

We have HD, CD/DVD, Disk full warning, and locked right now, but I'd like to have 5... it looks a bit nicer plus I'm sure I've forgotten something.

How about a firewire symbol, if it's a firewire drive?

I would like to see an Airport/Ethernet/Internet Widget that tells me what IPs I am connected to (what computer names they are associated with if know/ or Whois addresses they resolve to when internet related).
It would be nice if it also tracks how much data in and out / possibly ports used / and what local app/programs are communicating with them...and keep a history of sorts for each IP.

I have two ideas:
Disk activity light
or a S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics status - it can either show 'OK' or light up when there is a problem. I'll let you decide.

iSlayer
21st April 2005, 10:46 AM
good ideas but i doubt i can do either.disk activity would need live updating which needs cocoa plugins which i dont know how to make.
if there are any cocoa programmers here give me a yell....

Edit----

i should add the Hd monitor widget wont be live updating.
i will give options on when to update but the lowest will be 3 or 5 seconds i reckon.
i might be able to do 1 which is close enought to live but ill have to see how it plays with system resources especially cpu usage since ill just be dumping data from the terminal each time

ok here is a complete update on the tv widget(known as "AusTv")

Development has been slow for the last week due to many factors.the most important factor being i have to manually maintain feeds for 9,7,10 for adelaide, darwin and Canberra.im still building a script to do some of the work for me but i still have to manually get the data to give to the script.which for 9 channels and doing atleast 4 days at a time is going to take several hours a week for me.
most of the other feeds are working fine but there may be missing feeds for some paytv channels and some digital channels like the extra abc and sbs channels.
im not going to make feeds for them since its not feasable to do it.

all states will support 10,9,7,abc and sbs in both digital and analouge formats.all states will have paytv support(austar/foxtel/optus).

The feeds are no longer downloaded each time you want to use the widget. The feeds will be stored on my server and the widget will download them twice a week to keep them updated.

now thats out of the way heres a list of what works and what doesnt
General Interface
Complete but there will be a few small changes before the final release
Setup Utility
Has 1 or 2 small bugs but is more or less done
Add Channels
This is about to be rebuilt to remove the need for internet connectivity
Remove Channels
This was completed thismorning and is now 100% functional
Feed Downloader
Was completed on tuesday.tested and bug free.its actually an automater app...
EyeTv Support
Added !!! you can now click on a little eye icon next to each show and it will be added to your eyetv recording list if you have an eyetv
Feeds
feeds are still in development.ive got a script that downloads the next 7 days worth of feeds.just have to expand it to other states beside tasmania and then it will be complete.
Custom Feeds
Custom Feeds are the ones for adelaide, darwin and canberra.these will get done but are not priority right now.as i said above it has to be done manually so its a slow process and has to be done twice a week .not something im looking foward to but i have no choice

Thats all for now.dont think i missed anything.

And for those who asked for a more extensive feed it is happening soon.i will be doing another version that shows the next 6 hours or even more possible of shows for each channel.
Stay tuned for a mock image for that

I think that's it, unless people have more suggestions.

I didn't go for the firewire icon thing. It sounds like it's going to be to hard to implement.
I guess the back needs to be designed now.

Step right up and get your widget idea coded for you free of charge!
Well as I mentioned on #apple forum today (ummm.... yesterday - wow! look at the time) it would be handy to have a widget that synched up the bookmark file in my browsers.
Then again, maybe that's a dumb idea because Browser specs keep changing.... or I should only use one for browsing. But I don't I use different ones for testing webpages and banking.
Maybe bookmarks should live separately to the browser and pass it's contents on the fly.

marc
22nd April 2005, 12:55 AM
Maybe just have a bookmarks widget. It could launch any browser. I'm not sure exactly how handy that'd be though.

WidgetTracker
23rd April 2005, 11:59 PM
I don't know if it is possible, but I would love a widget that launches many of the applications that I don't use daily (so they are not on my dock) but still use often enough that it is inconvient going to my Applications/Utilities folder to access them.

For example, I would love a widget that I could use to launch the Terminal, Directory Access, Network Utility, Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, Apple Remote Desktop, Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, etc... just at a quick push of F11 and a click on the corresponding app.

These are apps that I do use fairly often but not often enough to want to clutter up my dock. I already have too many apps on my dock. Also, these apps don't allow dragging of files on them for opening so there is no need for them to be in my dock other than for quick access.

marc
24th April 2005, 09:35 AM
Yep. Good idea.

We've been discussing one like that :)

marc
24th April 2005, 04:46 PM
As you've pointed out, it'd be cool for infrequently used apps, the disadvantage is that it'd only be a launcher--I'm assuming drag and drop would be quite hard to implement. It'd be a handy widget though.

Here is the ultimate SciFi Widget:

StarGate Counter - 0.2.1

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26501StarGate Counter (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26501)

StarGate Counter is a neat little countdown widget that informs you of how many days there is left until Sci-fi channel shows the new StarGate SG1 and Atlantis Episodes. And it gets even more exiting! ;) Starting when it's 63 days left, a new lamp will be lit every week until every lamp is lit on day zero.

From VersionTracker

now if we just had one to count down until there were no more wars... Except Star Wars

I can't wait to use it while I'm sitting on the couch with the PB.

Friday’s update of Mac OS X 10.3 to version 10.3.9 included a few unmentioned surprises, Safari 1.3 and new versions of WebKit, WebCore, and JavaScriptCore that “contain thousands of improvements… made to the engine since Safari 1.2.” In addition to what Safari developer Dave Hyatt says is a 35% speed increase, the update includes a feature geared towards Widget developers, the “Use Transparent Window” option. The option, which can be found in the hidden “Debug” menu, allows you to preview widgets in an environment more visually similar to Dashboard, in a transparent layer over the desktop.

To enable the Debug menu, quit Safari and enter the following command in Terminal:

% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

yes you can.it has full functionality in safari.
the tv widget however does not because its much more complicated and uses the dashboard prefs system

i really want to get the tv widget out there but its not quite ready.im going to work on it all night tonight to try and get atleast a beta ready for tomorrow.

at the moment it seems to work fine.the only thing i have to do is the updating system which i havent worked out 100% yet.
after that i just have to finish getting the feeds ready.
i may choose to release a beta without support for pay tv tomorrow just to save a bit of time.
i really need to focus on the updating system right now as if that doesnt work 100% nothing will.

oh and ill try and get the eyetv stuff added.last time i checked it worked but i cant include it just yet because i need a list of what channel numbers the eyetv uses for each state.

Lavo if you can send me you channel data it would help me alot.then i can atleast give you a version with eyetv support.

Edit...

Oh and marc will you be arount tonight.im desperate to get some graphics i still need for the tv widget.all i need is a logo and some simple graphics for the back where you add channels..the logo i would like a little tv with "AusTv" on the screen.

When I get home tonight, I will email the channel data through for you. I'm assuming the data from EyeTV?

BTW, the MovieGuide works excellent in 10.4!

Another widget idea - a mail checker for OS X mail that check new mail in all folders, not just the inbox (if you have filters that puts mail into other boxes, there is no notification you have new mail). Konfab had a few widgets that did this.

im now aiming for sunday for a release as i have to start from scratch with the feed updater.

Now these widgets sound great!

I will be grabbing the TV Guide when it appears. Shame people couldnt grab data from yourtv or similiar sites... Having Now and Next shows in the widget I think will be good... but being able to click somewhere to then open a browser to show all FTA channels and a full schedule I think would be very handy! I use yourtv a lot!

Other widgets I'd personally love to see...

Netspace Usage Meter

Movie Schedule Times (I know it was discussed above - anyone have any knowledge where this data could be sourced from?)

White & Yellow Pages search (for Aust)

WhereIs would be great if it works!

Flight schedule (local content) would be cool too - I haven't played with the installed Flight Tracker one yet to see if it includes all our domestic carriers / flights.

Maybe a Whirlpool latest posts (similiar to the Appletalk one discussed)

Thats off the top of my head! I'm only just starting to play with Tiger and Widget use myself as I haven't seen Tiger until I installed it last night. I'm happy to start thinking of some original ideas though - rather than just sponge off other ideas already mentioned in here... but I'm not an IT person so I don't know how much I'll be able to help create them - apart from beta testing - which I'm happy to help with.

One already exists! (http://www.widgetdeveloper.com/newskin/widget.php?id=16&PHPSESSID=1ec19031e06d16e7e9e07c8e04d79c42)

Looking good.

One thing I am finding a bit annoying is not enough room for all my widgets. Maybe a widget that has a stamp sized foot print but becomes full sized at the touch of a button and back again would be nice. Radar widget is a perfect example of a widget that needs this.

yeah people need to do that more often.its very easy to do so there is no reason not to do it
i will add that in V2 of the movie widget and in V2 of AusTv

That sounds good.

Also with refesh, do widgets auto refresh based on their code? If so does the weather update frequently enough to catch any updates?

Also, any chance of some additional data from BOM like local predicted rainfall or some such?

Good idea.

As iSlayer has already said he'd like to add this, then I guess I'd better get moving on the graphics for it :D

Please note that Red Carpet doesn't need to be as big as it is shown—you can choose to view either "this week" or "this week and next week". That makes it about half the size.

Maybe we'll make it collapse so that it's just the title bar when shrunk.

I personally think that the idea with widgets is to have what you need left open, so you aren't ever too many clicks away from viewing the information. You don't want to have to shuffle the widgets around to see what you want. This means either having small widgets, or less of them.

We'll be really mindful of this in the future. A small widget is a good widget. Btw, we could make Red Carpet as small as you'd like, but of course the text needs to remain readable. I hope we've ended up with the right size. Most of the widget design was done in Illustrator, so it's all vector and can be scaled to any size if needed.

That's up to the widget.

My guess is that most of them would update frequently enough.

I was considering making a widget for helpdesk staff. Based on viewing data from interMapper.

InterMapper provides an excellent way of network troubleshooting and feeding that into a widget has been in the back of my mind since attending WWDC last year.

Kept simple the browser could feed the image or icon of the device with its address to the Widget. I was thinking about this, and a small light globe went off... tell me if I am being stupid...
We all have our sites on servers.... so why not approach the third party software writer and offer the code to be placed on their web site that could parse the data into your widgets format.

If they wont and in the case of InterMapper, it is site specific code you are trying to parse then simply have a basic html page on your server that parses the data to a widget sized document. As widgets are basic web browsers... why not get an external source to process the data.

Now I realise that this is not feasible for all widgets, all i am trying to do is pass on an idea that someone may find useful. Certainly when a software manufacturer has a proprietary web browser, and code widget authors have little control. This would put the control back into the users hands.

I'll agree with Islayer...

of all the machines I have installed Tiger onto by default it will grab your default location and place it into the Weather widget. But it is Hobart, NY.... New York

It says that it is Raining and cold... so there is not much difference ;)

But I must say that I did expect more from the built in widgets. Yellow Pages for US, Weather Widget which is very average in its location identifier and a flight tracker that really does not work well in Australia.

Ok, I know it is up to the local developers to produce an Australian version. So there is the challenge....

How about a widget for Australian share prices? The widget supplied with Tiger only works for US stocks.

There is free live share price data available from the ASX at:

If someone could write a widget that used this, it would be great.

I was also looking at using BOM for a weather widget. But seeing that I have limited HTMl parsing ability I have been learning as I go. Also finding some demo scripts that do not require modules loaded, or PHP is proving difficult. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Regarding the way that I enter Hobart into the weather widget... trust me it does not work. I think that the site in the US accuweather.com has issues. I did a manual lookup on their site and it lists Tasmania and most centres... but it has no data on them. such is life.

Also I find it odd that weather.com another US weather site works reliably. Well in a squirrelmail plugin it does (AWC_weather). I have sent a problem report to accuweather as I feel that their site should not default to certain locations, rather it should qualify the location properly.

i dont really need any help.
code wise its not easy working with someone on a widget and i can do everything thats required by myself.widgets are just to small for more then 1 person.

can be done but i would give this low priority personally.
dashboard has the ability to view results and error from commands and it can even do live updating with commands such as ping but alot of error checking would need to go into it to make sure one command doesnt break it.

ill put it on the list if you want but as i said its low priority right now

Another Widget I would like is a widget loader. I know there are application launchers out there, but I would like to have a couple of sets of widgets and be able to load them and quit the others at the click of a button. My reasoning for this is that during the day i'm interested in traffic reports and the weather (probably stocks for other people as well) and during the evening I would want movie info and a tv guide.

Ideally it would be customisable so that they could also take in the time and change automatically, am I being too lazy?

How about a widget that actually uses the Stickies Database rather than creating a new one!!!!

Hello!

Anyway here are my ideas:

- For Sydneysiders, a CityRail Service Interuptions widget, that would link from Cityrail's website and ive up-to-date service interruption information.

- A news widget from the Sydney Morning Herald or ABC or the like with up-to-date latest headlines, maybe with a function to localise the news....

Thanks in advance....

I believe that, in Australia and likely elsewhere, the very fact that someone creates a widget, or some prose.... automatically carries with it the assignment of copyright to the creator. One does not need to actively claim copyright, but one does need to actively give it away. Adding a little 'c' in a circle and the creator's name, does little (extra) other than documenting who has the copyright.

yes I didn't say anything about copying people's source ... I mentioned you can easily look at other people's code in order to work out how things happen or how a particular developer solved a problem.

Metlink (http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au) has a good route planner but it would be better if it's on our dahsboard ;)

Well speaking on behalf of all the MacBabes out there - I have been googling but as yet have not found a widget that does the below...so if you know of one please let me know..

But I would like to get a "Baby due widget"
You plug in all the calculations...so have a "your x weeks and y days preggers" and your baby is due in "x weeks and y days"

Cheers :D

I'm off to grab the new austv widget now!

I did think of an idea for a widget...
there is a US version... and our doesn't need to be as complicated...

But how bout a Qantas widget?
Either for flight schedule... or what I really was thinking was for departure and arrival information?!

I was looking for an easy way to open Widgets.

If I can open a Widget by double clicking it in the finder why won't they open if I put the Widget folder in the Dock & try to open them from there.

cloughie, 10.4.2 fixes this hassle, when you double click on a widget it asks if you want to keep it or delete it , if you select keep it moves it to the widget folder and leaves it there, if you click delete then it deletes it. simple really :)

This is sort of coming.

We're doing a mega-countdown widget that's really configurable. So it can do things like repeated countdown etc... like "Countdown to the weekend". It should be pretty cool.

We've almost finished "Countdown To Anything". Should be released in the next 24hours-ish, depending on how the testing goes.
