I can copy large files from my iMac internal drive to my Firewire external, but not to my USB external. They won't copy from the Firewire drive to the US drive either. Smaller files copy with no issues.

When I try I get the message "sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. error code 0". I've googled for an answer but not found anything relevant.

Any ideas?

Probably because your USB drive is in FAT32 format. Each file is restricted to a max of 4gb I believe... Can't remember off the top of my head

Zounds, that was quick. I just checked, and yep, it's FAT32.

Use System Profiler to check, Disk Utility to fix...they come with OSX.

(Actually, Disk Utility can do both!)
