View Full Version : Can't Access Internet with Safari - but works fine with Firefox???

Hi Guys,

My Powerbook has just started behaving strangely.

I am unable to access the Internet using Safari, or any other Apple application, ie OS X Software Update. However, Firefox works fine.

In Safari I receive a message "Safari can't find the server"

Is there a detect and repair function somewhere that would solve this?

If I recall correctly, Firefox lets you specify your network settings in its own preferences, whereas Safari uses your OS X network settings from System Preferences.

So I'm guessing that there is a problem with something specified in your OS X preferences - not necessary your machine, but maybe a proxy setting or something at your ISP. Using Safari, try connecting to a web site using https instead of http (https usually bypasses your ISPs proxy settings).

Tell us more about your connection to the internet - ISP, ADSL/cable, etc.

Do you have different locations set-up under network preferences (i.e. university/other network with a proxy)?

As Petronius notes, native OS X apps take network settings from you OS X preferences, FF does not.

You can check/change location under the apple menu.

Guys, thanks for your help. For some reason I was using a Proxy that had entered a long time ago, and worked fine to now, but suddenly stopped. I deleted the Proxy and all is good now.
