I have recently subscribed to an educational site that allows its resources - in .pdf format - to be downloaded and printed [for a fee].
However - at the end of the download, I am asked to install Adobe Reader instead of it opening in Preview. Is it worth installing Reader [ I would prefer not to] or do I have another issue with Preview?

Thank you.

I've had some issues with encrypted or fancy PDFs that have links to other files or applications with Preview. I installed Adobe Reader and use it for those particular PDFs. Although Adobe Reader puts its tentacles everything becoming the default PDF reader in Safari, etc., it's pretty easy to undo that.

Is there another pdf Reader for Mac that isn't as invasive?

My feeling is that these PDFs are using some proprietary Adobe PDF technologies that aren't included in Preview, or any other third party reader. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

find a pdf file that wants to open Reader... (in Finder)
Have a look at Get Info...

and then select the Open With option (to make sure it says Preview)...
then Change All

I have tried that however - if I do open it in Reader - additional info becomes visible - including an embedded link that I need to click that then makes the file appear.
Strange.
