View Full Version : Mac OS X 10.6 - Any names for it?

24th March 2008, 02:36 PM
The thread title explains it. My guess is Cougar. I was a bit from Wikipedia about the versions and it stated that Lynx and Cougar were registered by Apple back in 2004, but Lynx has already been used as a name for an open source text web browser for the Mac OS X Public Archive. All of the other names (Tiger, Leopard, Panther) have already been used and Apple does not have any other registered names left besides Cougar.

Any other names?

24th March 2008, 02:38 PM
Lynx the text-based browser was not created by Apple.

Your guess is as good as mine regarding 10.6. :)

Sorry it was the University of Kansas, then revived by open source people. It's under the MAC OS X Public Archive for UNIX / Open Source items:

Apple - Downloads - UNIX & Open Source - Lynx text web browser (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/lynxtextwebbrowser.html)

24th March 2008, 02:47 PM
Sooner or later they're going to run out of names.

24th March 2008, 02:49 PM
Nonsense, then it'll be OS XI!

24th March 2008, 02:50 PM
Of course Huy, but if they're going to register them as trademarks, then they would have to be public, wouldn't they?

24th March 2008, 02:50 PM
Codenames :p

And sometimes companies just register them for the sake of doing it, without actually putting it to use later on. They do that with patents too.

Apple will show they have a soft side by initially calling it Pussy, but will quickly change it to Felix

Maybe at this year's WWDC Steve will announce that 10.6 will be Lion, which will be followed in 2010 by OS XI. You can't really top Lion, after all :)

24th March 2008, 04:27 PM
I reckon they will hit Mac OS XI

Time to move on from the cats...

24th March 2008, 04:42 PM
Maybe in 2011, Apple may call the OS XI?

24th March 2008, 04:54 PM
Hello Kitty.

24th March 2008, 05:05 PM
I reckon they will hit Mac OS XI

But if we advance to OS XI, doesn't that mean there will have to be a major leap between the operating systems? Huge improvements? Completely redesigned?

If they just keep refining OS X, it makes more sense for them to keep releasing revisions of it as they have been: 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 etc

Im hoping they will drop the cat names altogether, first they were code names and sounded kinda different and cool now they are used publicly they just sound stupid. Lets just stick to OS X 10.6, piss off the kitty names.

24th March 2008, 08:49 PM
Tabby ?

24th March 2008, 08:51 PM
Either OS X 10.6 "lolcat" or just 10.6 will do fine :)

24th March 2008, 09:37 PM
I think 10.6 will be cougar, then they'll change to sharks or something.

10.7 Hammerhead, sounds good to me.

Deep down inside I'm hoping for MAC OS X 10.6 - UNICRON.

Hopefully somewhere involved in 10.6 is a massive transformers fan.

I suspect that most of the dog names posted here are not intended to be taken seriously.

If we're speculating on a new family of code names, how about trees (spruce, aspen, willow, etc.)?

I was initially going to suggest minerals/gems, but I think some are trademarked already (eg. ruby, pearl). And what would happen if you thought you were running an OS called 'Diamond', only to find out it was a cheap knockoff called 'Cubic Zirconia' ?

25th March 2008, 10:26 AM
OSX Garfield.

25th March 2008, 11:12 AM
I'm guessing Mac OS X is a brand that will stay for as long as X is an abbreviation for Unix, or the brand will slip back to simply Mac OS. As for version code names, look for other animal names in Apple trademarks. If cougar is the last unused name (doesn't matter if Lynx isn't Apple, I doubt they'd want the product confusion) Cougar's a good bet.
