As suggested I'm going to try and find a secondhand HD so I can swap
the chipset around to try and see if I can recover some data.

What numbers have to be the same when trying to match up a drive?

My old drive.
WD1200 Caviar
drive parameters: LBA 234441648
MDL: WD1200BB-00FTA0
DCM: HSBHNTJCH

the drive I am looking at

WD1200 Caviar
drive parameters: LBA 234441648
MDL: WD1200JB-00EVA0
DCM: HSBACTJCA

cheers

I believe with WD drives that the difference in the model number you have highlighted (J & B) indicates the size of the cache. I'm sorry I can't help you with the other numbers but I imagine all drives with a similar model number would use the same chip.

Anyone else know about trying to match hard drives
I have found another drive with a number of Wd1200BB-00GUA0
Matches my WD1200"BB" but the code after this is diff.
What does it mean and how would it relate to me swapping over the chipset?

cheers

Match hard drive parts to repair your hard drive (http://www.harddrive-repair.com/hard-drive-parts.html)

You would want the exact model (ie. BB over JB) and same firmware revision on the replacement hard disk PCB. Otherwise, it probably won't work.

yep, you would be looking at the rev of the PCB board...
